I visited in October 2013, which coincided with the End of Buddhist Lent Day. Houses and temples were decorated with lights and lanterns in front of every home for three nights. There was a temple fair with Burmese traditional theater. On the second day, the Loy Krathong event started at 4 a.m. Young men and teenagers partied all night and then floated krathongs in the morning. I stayed at Golden Hotel. I woke up at 3:30 a.m. and arranged a motorcycle to pick me up. We arrived just before 4 a.m. Visitors did not bring their own krathongs; they were sold cheaply at the event.
The krathong is similar to a monk's alms bowl, containing candles, incense sticks, flowers, and money. When floating on the Dawei River, people do not individually go to the riverbank to float them. Instead, they place the krathongs on a conveyor belt that carries them into the river. We just put them on the belt. The event also featured a live stage with traditional Burmese music and dance. Beautiful Dawei girls performed Burmese dances. The show started at 4 a.m. and ended at dawn. Many people were interested in watching, especially when girls danced. However, when it was only singing, the front of the stage became quiet. No drunken people were seen; the audience was well-behaved, probably asleep by then. Attendees were of all ages and families.
When the event ended, people went for breakfast. This day was a holiday for Dawei locals. The beach was crowded with visitors, mostly teenagers. I did not see many adults.
