It is the highest bridge in Myanmar, completed in 1900 over 100 years ago. It is still in use today, truly amazing. The Gokteik Bridge (Goteik) is located northeast of Mandalay, about 100 kilometers away, on the Lashio railway line, the capital of northern Shan State. It passes through Pyin Oo Lwin. Construction started in 1899 and was completed in 1900. The steel components were made by Pennsylvania Steel Corp and shipped from the United States.
This railway was built during the British Empire era. The bridge is 689 meters long, 250 meters above the river gorge below, and the tallest tower foundation is 102 meters high. This is a world-class masterpiece. I sat taking photos and videos on the bridge looking down into the gorge below while listening to chants from migrants fleeing the fighting in northern Shan State (I think). They were dressed in Indian-style clothing filling the train car.
They lay fully along the walkway. Some were chanting prayers involving Lord Shiva and scattering money to float on the wind down into the deep gorge. I felt the magic and was deeply impressed by this bridge many times over. When choosing seats for the return trip from Lashio or Hsipaw, sit on the right side of the train. The train passes through a tunnel first before crossing this gorge. Then the train stops at Goteik train station. For the outbound trip, sit on the left side.
Each train has locals riding along. You can ask them to let you sit and take photos while the train passes the Gokteik viaduct. They welcome tourists with smiles that impressed me.
