Most foreign tourists visiting Hsipaw walk to the Palaung hill tribe villages. The trek passes through both Shan villages and Palaung villages. Nowadays, all villages are accessible by motorcycle. I think riding a motorcycle is more convenient than walking and breathing dust for 5 hours. Tours to the villages offer options to stay 1 night, 2 nights, or just walk there, eat, and return. There are Chinese tourists here as well.

I saw several groups including Japanese and Westerners. I hired a private guide with a friend to walk to the Palaung village. But I didn’t walk long before taking a motorcycle to the village. The guide called someone to pick us up, costing 200 baht. For tours staying one night with 3 meals included, the price is about 1000 baht. If more people come, the price is cheaper. What impressed me most was staying overnight at a Palaung family’s home.

I learned about their eating culture and lifestyle. The Palaung village is located near water sources. Each household collects mountain spring water for their own use. In the morning, they bring flowers and rice to make merit at the temple. The Palaung people practice Buddhism. Women do housework and raise children, men work outside. The older generation still dresses in traditional Palaung attire with belts as a symbol. 'Palaung' means belt. The younger generation rarely wears traditional Palaung clothes except during festivals.

Palaung people live in China, Myanmar, and Thailand. Most Palaung in Myanmar are recognized by the Myanmar government as an ethnic minority in Shan State. There are a few Palaung in Thailand; I met some when visiting Doi Ang Khang. Their language belongs to the Mon-Khmer language group. It has been reclassified more recently than the Sino-Tibetan Khmu ethnic languages, now placed in the South Asian language family. Most Palaung live in Myanmar with a population of about

546,539 people. In Thailand, there are only about 5,000 Palaung. Most Palaung houses are made of bamboo wood. The front door usually faces east. Each family typically has their own house, often a two-story building. The lower floor is for keeping animals and storage, the upper floor is for sleeping. Women’s clothing varies greatly depending on the area they live in. Palaung people do not dress uniformly across all areas.

What I saw similar to Thailand is the belt. Palaung people like to drink tea and often have their own tea plantations. When I visited, they poured tea for us and stayed by the fire stove all day, pouring tea continuously. After a full meal, they drink tea instead of plain water like we do in Thailand.
