If traveling by bus to this city, you must pass through Monywa city, which takes approximately
18 hours by bus, or you can take a boat from Monywa to Kalay when the water level is high. Traveling by plane, as I did, using KBZ airline and others, takes 1 hour from Mandalay. Traveling from the Indian border checkpoint at Tamu takes 4 hours. Traveling from Hakka, the capital of Shan State, takes 12 hours. Myanmar is currently undergoing major road improvements, which will reduce travel times nationwide. Please check for updated information.
I plan to travel to see snowfall in Hakka again in January 2017. I will fly to Kalaymyo and then take a bus to Hakka. Before the Hakka airport is completed, this route is beautiful and charming with stunning views. The journey is thrilling all the way. How beautiful will it be when it snows?
