This town borders Manipur state of India. Tamu town is small but spread over several areas. From the reasonably large morning market, it shows there are quite a few people here. Burmese people in Tamu and Indians can cross this checkpoint. Tourists must have an Indian visa and permission to enter India through this checkpoint from Myanmar authorities by contacting a tour company in Yangon, which takes about 7 days.

You can backpack from Myanmar into India through the Tamu international border crossing. The town on the Indian side is called Moreh. There are plans to build a railway as an important trade route for China, Thailand, Myanmar, and India. But today the checkpoint is quiet compared to Mae Sai. In 2016, Mr. Hotsia traveled from Kalay to the Tamu border crossing. Tourists wishing to cross into Manipur, India, must have a passport and Indian visa.

You must have a permit letter to leave Myanmar. It is recommended to inquire at the Myanmar embassy in Thailand. Locals can cross the border freely between Myanmar and India. Near the border is an international market where tourists can walk around. Be cautious as transport vehicles do not run frequently. Sometimes motorbike taxis may unknowingly take you across the border.

If caught by officials, it is an offense. Proper exit must be through immigration. So be careful. The activity I recommend in Tamu is visiting the Tamu morning market, a charming traditional market. Some locals still sell vegetables by cart. The market opens early with candlelight at each stall, mostly selling fresh vegetables and local food. This is the main activity in Tamu. Tamu morning market - Mr. Hotsia, April 2016.
