A genuine Burmese experience on the journey from Mandalay to Naypyidaw, I used the service of Mandalarminn Express company. You can buy bus tickets at the hotel where you stay. They will call to reserve and someone will bring the tickets to you. On the travel day, we took a motorcycle or taxi from the city to the bus station. Mandalay bus station is about 5 kilometers from the city. Taxi fare from the city is 5 USD. I asked several taxis and the price was the same. Taking a motorcycle would probably be cheaper.

The road from Mandalay heading to Naypyidaw is a 6-lane road, 3 lanes each way. I saw vehicles traveling at speeds not exceeding 80 kilometers per hour, roughly speaking. The bus stopped halfway for a 30-minute meal break. Food is not free; you have to buy it yourself, but prices are reasonable. The bus I took continued all the way to Yangon. I rode past Naypyidaw city by 10 kilometers because I didn't realize we had arrived. I took a motorcycle back for 300 baht, which I thought was quite expensive. Naypyidaw has two bus stations, one in the city and one outside the city.

On the bus, we sat in assigned seats; there was no standing allowed. Each passenger was given a bottle of water. On the return trip from Naypyidaw to Mandalay with the same company, I bought the ticket myself at the bus station and learned that the hotel only gets a 20 baht commission per ticket. The return bus stopped for a meal at a different place. Myanmar's kilometer markers are very frequent, every 100 meters, and are flat markers. The main road has speed measurement points that inform drivers of their speed. From what I saw, no one was driving fast.

In summary, I was impressed with the service of Mandalarminn Express company http://mandalarminn.com.mm. Their Mandalay office is at Room (1), Kywe Se Kan, Chan Mya Shwe Pyi Highway Bus Compound, Phone: 02-78991, 09-6807272; Corner of 32x83 street, Phone: 02-91007993. In Naypyidaw: Bawgathiri Highway Bus Compound (A-2), Phone: 067-26020, 09-49245111; Room (10), Myoma Market, Phone: 421939, 09-49-245222. Mr.Hotsia August 2013
