I took a tourist-only bus from Mandalay using the OK company service. The fare was about 300 Baht per person (I might be mistaken but it was inexpensive). The total travel time including a stop to eat fried sparrows was about 5 hours. There are several trips daily. Tickets can be booked at the Fortune Hotel. If staying in Mandalay, the bus picks you up right at the hotel entrance. If you have limited time or budget, you can also fly from Mandalay to Bagan. Bagan can also be reached by boat from Mandalay, taking approximately
8 hours with a fare of about 1500 Baht. Bagan is a major tourist city with buses mostly full of tourists serving routes between tourist destinations such as Mandalay, Inle, and Yangon. Buses in Myanmar usually stop for meals and bathroom breaks along the way, so no need to worry about food or bringing your own.
