Authentic Burmese Poi Sang Long Festival. The food of Mandalay locals is not much different from Yangon. If you eat at street stalls, there are Yangon-style Burmese food stalls. You can order as many dishes as you want, served in small bowls. There is one pot of rice for self-serving. Eat as much or as little as you like. There are almost ten kinds of dipping sauces and chili pastes served with fresh vegetables. Anyone who can eat like this can travel comfortably. Besides street food, there are Chinese restaurants and places where you can order like at home-style restaurants.
Menus are available in Burmese and English with prices listed. I think traveling in Mandalay is worry-free when it comes to food. At least hotels usually provide breakfast. For lunch while traveling, it's easy to find simple street food. For dinner, look for busy restaurants, sit down and order what others are eating. I use this technique to watch and point. The dish I often order and can order in many countries is fried rice. In Burmese, it's called 'Tamin Jo', in Khmer it's 'Bay Cha'.
Vietnamese food rarely has fried rice from what I've seen. Now I won't go hungry in Myanmar. The special thing is fresh Myanmar draft beer costs only 15 baht per glass and tastes good. At shops with advertisements outside, just go in and order. I emphasize that bottled beer is not as good as draft beer. My favorite place to sit is the corner shop of the Fortune Hotel (31st Street, Between 82nd and 83rd, Central Mandalay, Mandalay) right at the corner. The food is delicious and reasonably priced.
When I traveled, I walked through villages and tried their local food. I think Thai people can eat it. Sometimes I found some unusual dishes. For example, at Mandalay morning market, I saw a vendor hand-mixing noodles with chili paste. At first, I thought she was making it for herself, but when finished, she served it to waiting customers. They mixed it enthusiastically without gloves, which gave a great vibe. So I ordered a bowl to eat with them. It was quite tasty. I imagined that Thai people in the past probably ate like this. It felt like traveling back in time to find food from the past.
