Another activity I often do when exploring and learning about local life while traveling in Southeast Asia is getting a haircut at local barbershops in different cities and countries. In Myanmar, there are two types of barbershops: traditional ones under trees, similar to the old Sanam Luang style, and more formal shops. Conveniently, the Fortune Hotel where I stayed is just to the right. The barbershop in Mandalay has about a dozen barbers, mostly young men.
This is not work for older people or exclusive to the shop I visited, I’m not sure. These barbershops don’t offer hair washing; once the cut is done, it’s finished.
