The Mahamuni Buddha Face Washing Ceremony and Authentic Burmese Poi Sang Long Festival The Mahamuni Buddha face washing ceremony takes place every morning starting around 4:00 AM. The chief monk performs the washing, and devotees come to participate in the ritual. The face is washed with scented water mixed with thanaka, using a golden brush to gently brush the Buddha's lips as if brushing teeth, offered to the Buddha. Afterwards, cloths donated by devotees are used to dry the face completely, accompanied by a golden fan waved in offering. The cloth used for drying is then returned to the donor.
Those who did not donate cloth can purchase a cloth used for wiping for about 50 baht. The face washing ceremony happens at a specific time with flower offerings before washing and drying. Only men are allowed inside; women stay in the front hall. The ceremony is broadcast via CCTV for outside viewers. During the ritual, prayers are chanted by Brahmins with musical accompaniment.
