Myanmar Dance: The first time was 20 years ago when I visited Kaeng Lawa, Kanchanaburi. They performed a Burmese or Myanmar dance, which is a jerky, swaying style. I was very impressed and never saw it again until a few years ago when I watched YouTube. When I arrived in Mandalay, I found out that there was a performance at Mintha Theater with tickets costing 240 baht per person or 8,000 kyats. I did not miss the chance to watch. This is a small traditional theater with a gong circle, flute, and the traditional Burmese harp at the front.
There was a live musical performance with Burmese dancers in various costumes on stage. I came to understand that Burmese dance has many styles such as Bagan dance, Bilu dance, Kinnara and Kinnari dances, Mount Popa's guardian spirits dance, Nat dance, Oil lamp dance, Ramayana dances, U Min Gyaw dance, U Shwe Yoe and Daw Moe dance, Zat pwe duet dance, and Zawgyi dance. Although the small theater I visited did not have all of them, it featured many and left a strong impression on me.
The theater starts at 8:30 PM. When I arrived close to 8:30 PM, there were no tourists watching yet. As soon as I arrived, the performers started dressing up. I felt very good to have supported the performance that day. Eventually, three Western tourists came to watch as well. I wondered why such an interesting show attracted so few people, possibly because it was the low tourist season. I hope this performance becomes popular so it can be preserved for future generations at Mintha Theater.
