Authentic Burmese Poisanglong (Mandalay Palace) is located in the center of Mandalay city, Myanmar. It is the last palace of the most recent Burmese monarchy. The palace was built between 1857 and 1859 as part of establishing the new capital city of Myanmar at that time. Mandalay Palace was built by King Thibaw. Most of the palace follows traditional Burmese design. The palace is surrounded by fortress walls and a moat, situated at the heart of the fortress.
During the British occupation of Myanmar in World War II, this palace was bombed by airplanes and completely damaged. What you see now is a reconstruction for tourism purposes. To visit Mandalay Palace, I recommend hiring a motorcycle taxi for 1-2 USD from anywhere in the city to the palace entrance. Buy a 10 USD or 10,000 Kyat combo ticket that allows entry to Mandalay Palace and 5 nearby attractions.
If you want to visit other places as well, arrange with your hotel to rent a motorcycle for a full day or a half afternoon, which is enough. Visiting five places costs 10 USD excluding entrance tickets, which you must buy yourself. Alternatively, you can hire a taxi if you are in a group, costing 20-30 USD depending on the car's condition and whether it has air conditioning. For me, visiting Mandalay Palace was just okay. I liked climbing the tower to take photos down below; the view of Mandalay city is quite good. Other parts were less impressive, possibly because I don’t know much history.
However, Mandalay Palace is a must-visit tourist spot because it is located in the city center, like the nose of Mandalay—you have to visit it anyway. But don’t expect too much. mr.hotsia books hotels in Mandalay nowadays.
