Authentic Burmese Poisanglong - U Bein Bridge, the world's longest teakwood bridge, stretches 1,300 meters across Taungthaman Lake from one shore to a small village. I woke up at 5 AM to catch the sunrise and not miss the early morning lifestyle of monks, fishermen, and locals at dawn. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from one side to the other. There is a full video showing fishermen and villagers crossing back and forth. It's very beautiful.
U Bein Bridge is considered the longest wooden bridge. The second longest is the Mon Bridge at Sangkhlaburi, Kanchanaburi, which was damaged by floods. To visit here, you can rent a motorbike with a driver for 450 Baht per day. Explore Amarapura city with U Bein Bridge, Sagaing Hills, and then visit the ancient city of Inwa (Ava). I think this is very worthwhile. Besides early morning, the time before sunset is also interesting to visit.
But I prefer the early morning. People just waking up to cook rice, monks walking for alms, people gathering nets and fishing. The atmosphere is wonderful. Don't miss walking to the village at the end of the bridge and strolling around the village in the morning. The village also has Kyauktawgyi Paya pagoda. When there are no tourists, this bridge is a popular spot for young couples from Amarapura to get close—I secretly saw it :) mr.hotsia August 2013 Book hotels in Mandalay now.
