Traveling Yangon Myanmar on Your Own - Burmese Food

On my trip to Myanmar, I was very determined to taste authentic Burmese food to truly experience the Burmese way of life. I had a car take me to the suburbs where I saw a small shop crowded with many trishaws parked outside. The shop had several pots of curry lined up, so I decided to try that place immediately. I noticed people eating with their hands, so I tried it too. Actually, when I was a child in Bang Bo, I also ate with my hands during meals with shrimp paste chili dip and fried mackerel. You have to eat with your hands for it to taste good.

One Burmese dish I recommend is the fermented fish chili dip with fresh vegetables. Most shops serve it. You mix the chili dip with rice and eat it with fresh vegetables; it's very delicious. It's similar to the fermented fish chili dip from my hometown but without coconut milk. Other Burmese dishes tend to be rich and oily, like Hang Lay curry, a spicy curry with lots of coconut milk. If you can eat those, you won't starve in Myanmar. Another type of food shop in Yangon sells stewed pork and pork offal on skewers for 50 cents each. The shops are roadside with Burmese girls selling.

Sometimes young men too. They sit on small chairs in a circle, eating and chatting. There are dipping sauces and a sweet broth. If you want a particular part, the owner will slice it and skewer it for you. Another charm is watching the street life. Most shops are in busy areas near bus stops or similar places. I tried it and have a video clip. It's delicious. In summary, restaurants in Yangon serve dishes around 100 baht each in air-conditioned places, with many options. Or you can order made-to-order dishes in the evening for about 80-150 baht per dish. Middle-class people like to sit, drink, and order food together.

Or you can eat from trishaw food stalls like I did, with meals costing 30-50 baht depending on how much you order. I recommend prioritizing cleanliness. Getting sick far from home would be troublesome. Mr.hotsia recommends popular hotels in Yangon. Typical local Burmese food shops serve food by scooping into bowls, not pouring over rice. Some people bring tiffin carriers to buy food to take away. The appearance is somewhat like spicy pickled shellfish salad.
