Yangon by yourself. I have already recommended traveling Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam by yourself. Now it’s time to explore Myanmar on your own. Actually, Mr.Hotsia has traveled many border areas between Thailand and Myanmar such as Mae Sai, Tachileik, Mae Sot, and the Three Pagodas Pass. If entering from the border, no passport is needed, just a border pass card valid for two nights. You must exit from the same border you entered. At Mae Sai, you can say you want to visit Kengtung but you must have a Burmese guide who charges per day.

1000 baht, the guide can take any number of people but a guide is required and you must exit through Mae Sai. For real Myanmar travel, they only allow entry and exit by plane and a visa is required. I will share my experience to provide information for future travelers. This trip I stayed in Yangon for 6 nights. Traveling Myanmar by yourself starts with getting a visa. For express service, it costs about 1,200 baht; for normal service about 800 baht. You can get it at the Myanmar embassy by yourself.

Or you can have a tour company or visa service company handle it, but they will charge extra. I paid a company 1,300 baht for the normal service. Required documents for the Myanmar visa are: passport with at least 6 months validity, two 2-inch color photos, and a flight ticket booking confirmation. It’s not difficult for Thai people. When you get the visa, it will state the expiration date; you must travel and leave before the visa expires.

The visa allows a single entry per trip for the tourist visa I used. There is news that Myanmar offers visa on arrival but it is not a tourist visa and requires an invitation letter from Myanmar. Usually, the airline at the origin will not allow boarding without the visa on arrival documents because they are responsible for returning passengers. In summary, all Thai tourists must get a visa before traveling to Myanmar. Once you have the visa and flight ticket, prepare for your trip.

Exchange new US dollar bills and tell the airport you are going to Myanmar. Exchange as much as you plan to use. Usually, daily expenses for food, travel, and accommodation are about a thousand baht. Exchange all your dollars. Upon arrival at the airport, exchange half into Myanmar kyat. Exchange a mix of large and small bills. I think you don’t need many one-dollar bills. When I went, I exchanged too many and had leftovers. Bring 100 and 50 dollar bills. Exchanging Myanmar money will get a better rate with larger bills. Remember, wrinkled dollar bills are not accepted; you must exchange them back in Thailand. On travel day, pack your bag as I suggest.

No rushing, no price gouging, smile brightly, chat, and most speak good English except for some trishaw drivers who may not speak much. In summary, a taxi from Yangon airport to the city costs 8 US dollars. This was the price on June 6, 2013, when Mr.Hotsia traveled. For guesthouses in Myanmar, I recommend staying at Okinawa Guest House Yangon. It is a good and affordable accommodation located near the Pagoda Mosque area in downtown Yangon.

I recommend this place because it offers better prices than others. Or you can book a hotel in Yangon via Agoda in case you arrive late. The accommodation cost at Okinawa Guest House Yangon is 750 baht (25 USD) per night for a single traveler, or 900 baht (30 USD) for two nights. It’s within walking distance to the market. Taxi to Shwedagon Pagoda costs 60 baht or 2,000 kyat. For traveling within Yangon city, I recommend walking a lot for a day.

Then use taxis to visit Shwedagon Pagoda multiple times a day at reasonable prices. You can also take the city train around Yangon for 1 USD for 3 hours to enjoy the views until bored. Taxi fares in Yangon are 60-80 baht per trip. If you want to visit other cities, renting a car through the hotel is safer because the hotel guarantees the service. Myanmar food is quite similar to Thai food but usually greasier.

Many curries are similar, such as the Shan-style curry and pork stew. Restaurants in Myanmar do not serve food on rice; they serve dishes separately on plates. You order as many dishes as you want, each served on its own plate with rice separately. For picky eaters, I recommend eating at KSS restaurant near the Pagoda Mosque area. They offer Wi-Fi with moderate speed. You can eat and update Facebook at the same time. I really liked the food at KSS Yangon. Traveling Myanmar, Yangon by yourself is not difficult.

Yangon is a safe city. I saw many Japanese tourists, both men and women, traveling alone. Thai tourists are also increasing. Burmese people are friendly and want to talk with Thai people. Burmese speak good English. Traveling the main cities of Myanmar by yourself is feasible immediately. As for Mr.Hotsia, I plan to travel all over Myanmar but will need to practice the language. Please stay tuned to see if I succeed. Mr.Hotsia June 2013 recommends popular hotels in Yangon. Preparing to travel to Myanmar Yangon airport Air Asia landing.

Exchange rate for dollars at Yangon airport, Myanmar money, nasi lemak on Air Asia, eating nasi lemak on the plane, I like it, delicious. OKINAWA guest house Yangon Myanmar, Okinawa guest house at night, sometimes hearing chanting, gives a very good feeling. Guest house in Yangon, Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar food, eating like a local. Waiting to board at Don Mueang airport, arriving late on the first day, so I booked a hotel in advance.
