Crossing is done by local boats hired for 60 Baht per person. If there are few passengers, you must wait until the boat is full before crossing. Alternatively, you can pay a private fare depending on the agreed price (300 Baht). The Thai-Lao crossing sees many travelers during the Thai-Lao market days on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Bueng Kan border is about 3-5 kilometers from Bueng Kan town. You can take a tuk-tuk for 50 Baht from town to the border. Free restrooms are available at the border.
The ferry boat runs frequently, so no need to worry about availability. Avoid coming during lunch break as it is the rest time for the Lao side. After Thai exit procedures, wait for the boat and cross to Paksan. The boat ride takes some time. Upon arrival in Laos, there are three passport checks: first when boarding the boat, second at the immigration checkpoint in Paksan, and third when exiting the checkpoint. Once completed, you are warmly welcomed to Paksan, Borikhamxay Province, Laos.
From the border, tuk-tuks are available to Paksan town. Waiting for a group to share the ride reduces cost. I enjoyed the scenic view from the border to Paksan town. The ferry fare from Bueng Kan to Paksan is 60 Baht per person. The boat departs only when full unless you pay extra for early departure. Immigration procedures at Paksan border are straightforward. Take a tuk-tuk a few kilometers from town to Bueng Kan border to cross to Paksan. On the ferry from Bueng Kan to Paksan, after immigration clearance, tuk-tuks are more convenient than walking the 4 kilometers to town, but walking is also an option to enjoy the scenery.
