In Chiang Khong, there are at least two Lao markets I know.

The term 'Lao market' refers to markets where many Lao people cross over to buy and sell goods on the Thai side. The first market is in Chiang Khong town in front of the municipality, where there is the Friday temple market. The other market is Jam Pong Market. Ban Jam Pong is located on the way to Wiang Kaen, about 20 kilometers from Chiang Khong. It is a riverside village along the Mekong River and serves as a checkpoint allowing Lao people to travel to the Thai side and register their entry here. The market is open on Wednesdays and Sundays, starting early in the morning and closing at noon.
The highlight of this market is the goods that Lao people bring across by boat from the Lao side. During the boat crossings, several boats arrive, and merchants stand waiting to buy goods right there. Most items are forest products and rattan. I encountered a special item: very large rattan worms. Locals here enjoy eating them. I bought some to fry but did not dare to eat them because they were very big. The items sold at the Lao market at Ban Jam Pong are mostly everyday goods and clothing. Lao people come to buy these for use in their homes. mr.hotsia January 2013.
