Before discussing the 4th Mekong River Bridge, let's review the first three Thai-Lao Mekong River bridges. The first bridge is at Nong Khai, crossing to Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The second is at Mukdahan-Savannakhet. The third is at Nakhon Phanom-Tha Khaek, completed in 2011. The latest Mekong River bridge to Laos is the bridge from Ban Don Mahawan.

Chiang Khong to Huay Sai, Bokeo Province, Laos, is expected to be completed in 2014. Construction is currently underway. Once this route is finished, traveling from Thailand to Yunnan, Kunming will be much easier and faster, passing through Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Boten, and into China. Currently, at the Chiang Khong boat pier, a ferry is used to transport vehicles between Thailand and Laos. Part of the trade route from Yunnan to Thailand still uses boats from Yunnan to Chiang Saen pier, bringing goods from China to sell, including items sold in Mae Sai.

Once this bridge is completed, traveling by car from Bangkok to Kunming will be a normal trip anyone can make. I personally visited the construction site; they are preparing roads and worker camps on both the Lao and Thai sides. Hopefully, it will be completed as planned in 2014. Traveling to Yunnan, China will be much easier. Meanwhile, I am practicing speaking Chinese to prepare myself. (Mr.Hotsia The 4th Mekong River Bridge is 11.6 kilometers long and will be a two-lane bridge.

It includes a 480-meter-long bridge with sidewalks and a 150-meter-long approach bridge on the Thai side, totaling 630 meters. The Thai side road is a 4-lane paved highway, 5 kilometers long, with traffic direction changes via ground-level intersections and traffic lights. The border checkpoint building features Lanna architectural style. On the Lao side, the road is a 2-lane paved highway about 6 kilometers long, with a border checkpoint building designed in Lan Xang architectural style.

The route from Chiang Rai has a newly built 4-lane highway from Ban Hua Doi, Mueang District, Chiang Rai Province, to the 4th Mekong River Bridge, approximately 75 kilometers. This new route will shorten the original 135-kilometer distance significantly and is expected to be completed in 2014.
