The contest is held at Tha Pha Than pier. Hmong and Lao people cross the Mekong by boat to join. Everyone smiles as if it’s a village event, not a formal ceremony like in big cities.
The Miss Songkran parade and contest have a charm rarely seen in urban society. The parade uses pickup trucks decorated mainly with flowers. Each subdistrict sends its own Miss Songkran contestant. Villagers walk naturally in the parade without lining up, allowing anyone watching to join in sending Miss Songkran off and celebrating along the way. The beautiful ladies who are Miss Songkran smile while sitting on their decorated trucks. I like this simple parade style; you can walk anywhere to take photos.
You can walk and smile at any Miss Songkran parade. Everyone in each village’s parade knows each other. I like this simple Songkran the most. The Miss Songkran contest at Tha Pha Than pier on the Thai-Laos border with the Mekong River in between has Lao people crossing by boat and Hmong people dressed up attending the event. Along the Mekong, Chiang Khong locals enjoy splashing and soaking in the water happily. The event features som tam, sticky rice, and food and drink stalls. Villagers sit together by their subdistricts with no quarrels, cheering enthusiastically.
On stage, the contest proceeds according to the schedule until late afternoon.
