The Songkran Buddha water pouring procession starts in the afternoon.
There is a traditional dance welcoming the procession in front of the district office. The Buddha water pouring procession circles around Chiang Khong town from Krang Road to Luang Road. People on both sides of the street prepare water to pour on the Buddha statues in the procession. The procession is organized by various subdistricts as a community cooperation. This is a simple Songkran tradition with few people, done for their own custom. Tourists may be present but are not the focus. After the Buddha procession circles the town, it returns to the district office.
Afterwards, there is a water pouring ceremony to pay respect to the elders in the district. MP Pichet Chueamuangphan and other elders attend the event. For the general public, they pour water to pay respect to family elders such as parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. They use water mixed with oranges to release. The younger ones ask for forgiveness for any past mistakes by touching the elders' hands with flowers dipped in water. Then the elders give blessings and may tie a string bracelet on the younger ones. This is the tradition during the water pouring ceremony to elders in the village. Mr.Hotsia, April 2013.
