Morning Merit-Making during Songkran in Chiang Khong http://www.hotsia.com > Traveling Chiang Rai > Morning Merit-Making during Songkran in Chiang Khong. A trip where Mr.Hotsia visited Chiang Khong: Giant caterpillar at Ban Jaempong market, Ban Ngom Hin, Ban Don Mahawan, Miss Songkran of Chiang Khong, ritual worship of the Pla Buk spirit, Songkran water splashing in Chiang Khong, boat racing in Chiang Khong, Buddha statue procession and water pouring in Chiang Khong, almsgiving during Songkran in Chiang Khong. On Songkran day in Chiang Khong, there is an almsgiving ceremony with 99 monks.

The almsgiving procession starts from Wat Hua Wiang and ends at Wat Hat Khrai. The people of Chiang Khong come out to offer alms in the morning around 8:00-10:00 AM. They offer alms in front of their houses. While receiving alms, pickup trucks run alongside the monks. I personally don’t like taking photos this way because I think the pictures don’t come out well, but I understand it’s to make carrying things easier. Later I learned that the first monk in the procession is the district chief monk of Chiang Khong. Mr.Hotsia, April 2013.
