Hmong people ride pickup trucks spraying water along the main road. I think the atmosphere is just right, not too crowded. Chiang Khong Songkran has many children, no signs of drunkenness or messy powder fights with girls; they play politely. The Songkran festival lasts several days, starting with alms giving to 99 monks, followed by a procession to pour water on the Buddha images, boat races, and at night, performances on the Tha Pha Than stage. At the Buk pier, there is a tribal princess contest. Chiang Khong Songkran is not inferior to other cities in Thailand. Most people playing Songkran here are Hmong from Wiang Kaen district.
Pickup trucks are fully loaded, arriving early to play in the water all day and returning in the evening. At the Buk pier stage, there are Hmong singers and hosts speaking the Hmong language. Lao people cross over to join the Songkran festival, enjoy the event, and play in the water. The atmosphere is full of fun. What impressed me most about Chiang Khong Songkran is the tradition of placing 'Tung' flags into the sand mound at the temple. Not only the elderly but also young people go to place Tung flags, riding motorcycles to the temple. This kind of atmosphere is rare to see. I like this simple Songkran. I have been celebrating Songkran in Chiang Khong since the first day.
Joining in merit-making by giving alms, temple visits, Buddha bathing ceremonies, boat races, and hours of water splashing. It’s the first time in decades that I have played Songkran water like this. I want friends to come visit Chiang Khong a lot, to see a peaceful Songkran town by the Mekong River on the Thai-Lao border. mr.hotsia Enjoy traveling Songkran Chiang Khong 2013 Songkran festival chiangkhong Thailand Water festival chiangkhong Thailand Riding water-splashing trucks Songkran Chiang Khong Chiang Rai Songkran festival in Temple
