If you stay overnight or visit in the evening, the area along the Mekong River hosts several restaurants with seating. Locals from Chiang Saen also enjoy coming here for delicious food while admiring the view of the Laos side across the river. On the Laos side is Bokeo Province, sharing the border with Huai Sai opposite Chiang Khong.
The beautiful view of Chiang Saen makes it a relaxing spot for locals from afternoon until night. Most nearby shops sell grilled items. I was intrigued by the grilled snakehead fish cooked in bamboo tubes, which many vendors offer. It’s something I had never seen before. However, I didn’t try it this trip but plan to taste it next time and share my experience. I only sampled a little grilled pork. This place focuses more on the view than the food. Chiang Saen has a deep-water port with boats from Myanmar and China docking here.
The crews come from various countries, keeping Chiang Saen lively throughout the day even if tourists are few. Most crew members eat and hang out near the port. Most riverside restaurants like these are frequented by locals. The Mekong riverside atmosphere is even more inviting with stairs leading down to the water. Locals enjoy sitting here before dusk. ....Mr.Hotsia The riverside atmosphere at Chiang Saen features grilled fish stuffed with herbs by the Mekong River. The Chinese-style roast duck is delicious, ready to eat after reheating in the microwave. Snakehead fish grilled in bamboo tubes is also popular.
The Chinese market by the Mekong River in Chiang Saen offers affordable prices. Grilled milk flour or grilled buffalo milk is fragrant and tasty. On my trip, Mr.Hotsia visited Chiang Khong - Chiang Saen, Ban Nom Hin, Ban Don Maha Wan, the 4th Mekong River Bridge, Art Children’s Temple in Chiang Saen, Wat Phra That Chedi Luang, Chiang Saen Night Market, Riverside Market in Chiang Saen, restoration of the ancient Chiang Saen city gate, and the Golden Triangle at night.
