Delicious Chinese Chili Paste Getting a border pass to Laos at Chiang Saen behind the district office There is a small room for tourists to get a border pass to cross the Mekong River to visit Ban Ton Phueng, Ton Phueng City, Bokeo Province, Laos or to visit Myanmar at the Golden Triangle. Chiang Saen checkpoint is not an international border checkpoint, passports cannot be used. It is only a temporary border pass allowing a stay in Laos or Myanmar for two nights. The fee is 30 baht.
Getting a temporary border pass behind Chiang Saen district office requires only a national ID card. There is a photocopy service nearby with a small fee. The process takes less than a minute. Then walk across the street to the riverside side where there is an exit checkpoint to get your exit stamp. Then take a boat from the checkpoint for 50 baht per person. Boats run continuously, no long wait.
For tourists who want to visit only Don Sao Island, no temporary border pass is needed. You can rent a boat directly from the pier. Upon arrival at Don Sao, a small fee is charged, then you can shop duty-free. I have seen many Thai tourists travel this way, mostly by speedboats or two-section boats. If you go gambling at the casino, they provide parking. But for Mr.Hotsia’s style, I park at Chiang Saen police station then take the boat to Laos. Most people park at the casino parking lot. I have never used that service. If you plan to gamble on the Laos or Myanmar side, ask locals there for more information.
