In Chiang Rai, there are metered taxis for convenient travel. Chiang Rai's metered taxis are a bit unusual; if you go outside the city, the fare is 10 baht per kilometer, not meter-based. For example, going to the airport about 10 kilometers costs 100 baht. Within the city, fares are meter-based and not expensive. On very hot days, you might escape the heat by walking around Central Chiang Rai, which has multiple floors, restaurants, cinemas, and banks, all air-conditioned and very comfortable. There are many tourists. Chiang Rai has changed a lot with many Chinese tourists visiting, some driving themselves and some backpacking. Some Thai tourists come by AirAsia or drive directly. For air-conditioned rooms, the price is 600 baht per night. I once checked in at 9 PM and negotiated a discount to 500 baht. This hotel is next to the clock tower, not far from the Saturday night walking street Kad Chiang Rai Remembrance and the morning and evening markets. For breakfast, Saharos rice porridge restaurant is right in front, along with the Yellow Car coffee shop. Across the street is the famous Phetchaburi and Ratchaburi restaurant.
