http://www.hotsia.com > Travel Chiang Rai > Hmong New Year Festival. A trip Mr.Hotsia took to Chiang Khong visiting the Giant Worm Night Market at Ban Jaempong, Ban Ngam Hin, Ban Don Maha Wan, Chiang Khong Songkran Lady, the Pla Buk Spirit Worship Ceremony, Chiang Khong Songkran Water Splashing, Chiang Khong Boat Racing, Chiang Khong Buddha Bathing Procession, Chiang Khong Songkran Alms Giving, and Songkran Merit Making. I have traveled to many tribal areas but only experienced the Hmong New Year festival when I visited Wiang Kaen early this year.

In 2013, the Hmong people, also known as the Miao who migrated from southern China over a hundred years ago, celebrated their New Year. In China, the Hmong are called Miao and number about 10 million. I read this in the Lonely Planet book. At Wiang Kaen, I encountered the New Year festival where they throw black cloth balls. Today's Hmong dress in full traditional attire, and the Hmong girls dress beautifully. The Hmong New Year involves many ceremonies. I don't know all the details, but more information is available on Wikipedia. Each village celebrates the Hmong New Year at different times.
For example, Wiang Kaen held the festival earlier than usual this year. From my perspective, I liked the colorful and beautiful outfits of the Hmong girls. When the girls threw the round black cloth tops, Hmong boys would join in the game, throwing and chatting together. This is probably a time for young men and women to court each other. If you visit Wiang Kaen, be sure to also stop by the Wiang Kaen vineyard. Enjoy an exciting trip with Mr.Hotsia. January 2013.
