Chiang Rai Yi Peng Lantern Festival

http://www.hotsia.com > Chiang Rai > Yi Peng Lantern Festival How to Release Yi Peng Lanterns (Sky lanterns, Yi Peng lanterns, or sky lanterns invented by Kong Beng for military signaling. Today, Yi Peng lanterns are released to let go of suffering, similar to the Loy Krathong festival where bad luck is floated away on the river. Releasing lanterns nowadays symbolizes letting all negativity disappear into the sky. The lantern release has become very popular in recent years, though many people are still a bit hesitant.)

Whether you plan to release the lanterns in any way or have never done it before, today I, Mr.Hotsia, will show you how to buy Yi Peng lanterns and teach you how to release them by the Mekong River in Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province. The atmosphere from evening to night is the most beautiful. The lanterns you buy may come with the fuel tied on or without it. If it’s untied, there will be small loops on four sides to tie to the lantern base in the center (see my instructional video). When ready, hold the lantern high and light the fuel at the bottom.

The most common mistake is waiting for the fire to fully catch so the lantern can rise. To make the lantern rise straight, fast, and in the right direction without falling nearby, wait until the lantern is very hot. Be patient—you can chat and take photos while waiting. Once the hot smoke fills the lantern, release it from your hands. Your Yi Peng lantern will then gracefully float up. Be careful to release lanterns only in open spaces so they don’t get caught in trees or buildings, which could cause fires.

Do not attach fireworks to the lanterns because if they don’t rise high enough and fall, they can cause trouble for locals. With best wishes from Mr.Hotsia, this website provides instructions on releasing Yi Peng lanterns during the festival, wholesale sources for Yi Peng lanterns in Lamphun Province, the atmosphere by the Mekong River in Chiang Saen before releasing lanterns, children releasing lanterns in Chiang Saen, and other trips by Mr.Hotsia including the cold at Doi Inthanon, palm reading at Huap Mok, the thrilling beauty of Doi Chang Moob, and a hunter by the Ping River.
