Travel Chiang Rai: The Land Boat Floating Tradition
http://www.hotsia.com > Travel Chiang Rai > Land Boat Floating Tradition Usually, people only hear about the fire boat floating tradition, well known in Nakhon Phanom. But what I found is the land boat floating tradition at Ban Pak Ing, Chiang Khong District, Chiang Rai Province. The abbot of the temple explained that this is an ancient tradition originating from Luang Prabang, Laos, because the people of Ban Pak Ing are Laotians who migrated from Laos, bringing this land boat floating tradition with them. The land boat floating is held annually on the day marking the end of Buddhist Lent.

The land boat floating involves making a model boat with candles for villagers to light and pray for forgiveness from the Mekong River Mother. The boat is placed at the temple and is not actually floated on water. Although Ban Pak Ing is next to the Mekong River, the boats are not floated there. There may be other places with this tradition, but the only one I found is here. If you want to visit the land boat floating event in Chiang Khong, come to Wat Pak Ing Tai. You can contact the Sri Don Chai Municipality for the event schedule.
Since Ban Pak Ing is part of Sri Don Chai Subdistrict, the event is usually held on the day marking the end of Buddhist Lent every year. On the opposite side of Chiang Khong, in Huai Sai town, there is the fire boat floating and Loy Krathong festival one day after the end of Buddhist Lent. One lesser-known tradition is the firecracker dance. In the past, people made their own fireworks with nails and glass shards. When lighting them, dancers would perform under the fireworks, called the firecracker dance in Lao. The dancers had to use protective spells to avoid burns and cuts.
Nowadays, fireworks are no longer homemade but bought in jars. However, the firecracker dance still continues. If you visit the land boat floating in Chiang Khong, you will see it. You have to imagine how it was done in the past when everything was handmade, not bought like today. Monks and novices from Laos staying here would compete in making fireworks for fun. Today, it’s easier to buy them, and the firecracker dance is fading. So you should come visit before it disappears. mr.hotsia End of Buddhist Lent 2012-2014 Authentic Lao-style land boat floating, filmed with LG G3 mobile camera.
