There is a beautiful and romantic dream world on the high mountain peak with an endless sea of mist. All these dreams and imaginations are beautifully gathered here. Phu Chi Fa, the highest peak of Doi Pha Mon in Chiang Rai province, is a land embraced by mist surrounding the complex mountain ranges. The peak, seen from afar, appears as a sharp summit pointing to the sky like a magical finger, earning it the nickname 'The Roof of Siam.' At the viewpoint, there is a wide grassland of about 1 square kilometer.
This is the pointed tip that gives Phu Chi Fa its name, extending towards Laos. Many who stand here jokingly say they have traveled abroad. When the mist clears, you can see the village of Chiang Tong in Laos below, surrounded by lush green forest. During the winter season, Phu Chi Fa is adorned with white Chiew flowers blooming fully along the hillside under the sunlight.
Whether standing at the heart of the peak, the view ahead is golden light interspersed with clouds across the sky, a grand and romantic scene beyond words. The best time to see the sea of mist and sunrise is from November to January. To see the Chiew flowers in full bloom, visit between January and February. To enjoy the sea of mist here, an overnight stay is necessary. Various resorts are available before the mountain ascent. The Phu Chi Fa Forest Park does not offer accommodation; visitors must bring their own tents.
Tents brought should be sturdy and have waterproof tarps to protect against dew. Phu Chi Fa Forest Park is located within the Mae Ing Right Forest Reserve and Mae Ngao Forest, in Ban Rom Fa Thong Village, Moo 9, and Ban Rom Fa Thai Village, Moo 10, Po Subdistrict, Wiang Kaen District, Chiang Rai Province. It is within a conservation forest area or Zone C forest according to the zoning map, covering approximately 2,500 rai.
The Forestry Department officially established the forest park on February 6, 1998. The park area is a high peak in the Doi Pha Mon mountain range, bordering Thailand and the Lao People's Democratic Republic, with elevations ranging from 1,200 to 1,628 meters above sea level. The highest point is at the viewpoint, with an average slope of about 40 percent. The mountain climate is relatively cool with a tropical monsoon pattern influenced by the southwest monsoon during the rainy season.
And the northeast monsoon during the winter. The area has three seasons: summer from March to May, rainy season from June to October, and winter from November to February. The flora and fauna consist of montane evergreen forest except for about 300 rai of grassland at the summit. Important plant species include white Chiew flowers, various species of Kordia, cinnamon, benzoin, Ficus, and several types of wild flowers and trees.
Lower vegetation includes ground orchids, cogon grass, vetiver grass, tail grass, three-person grass, broom grass, and various mosses and ferns. Mammals found here include barking deer, chevrotain, wild boar, civet, palm civet, leopard cat, wild cat, wild pig, binturong, porcupine, mongoose, bats, and wild rabbits. Birds include doves, hawks, storks, eagles, owls, bulbuls, drongos, magpies, owlets, hornbills, mynas, orioles, thrushes, and various other species.
Additional birds include woodpeckers, coucals, swallows, peacocks, shrikes, barbets, and junglefowl. Amphibians include turtles, frogs, and toads. Reptiles include various snakes, monitor lizards, pangolins, and geckos. Phu Chi Fa is the highest peak in the Doi Pha Mon range at 1,628 meters above sea level. The side facing Laos has steep cliffs and offers the most beautiful viewpoints, especially during winter when the scenery is exceptionally stunning.
Most tourists stay overnight in Ban Rom Fa Thong, about 1.5 kilometers from the viewpoint, then hike up Phu Chi Fa to watch the early morning view. Along the way, you will find blooming wild Himalayan cherry plantations (January and February). The white Chiew flowers bloom fully around the base of Phu Chi Fa. By car, Phu Chi Fa is about 144 kilometers from Chiang Rai city. Travel from Chiang Rai city to Phu Chi Fa follows these routes:
1. From Chiang Rai city to Thoeng district, passing the Phu Sang Witthayakhom School intersection, Ban Sop Bong, and Ban Muang Chum intersection, then continuing to Phu Chi Fa. 2. Via provincial highway 1093, passing Phu Sang Waterfall, Ban Huak checkpoint, and the Doi Pha Mon Highland Agricultural Promotion Center. Tourist spots include Phu Sang Waterfall (Phu Sang National Park) and the Doi Pha Mon Highland Agricultural Promotion Center, which experiments with and promotes cold-climate flowers such as tulips and lilies.
From Phu Chi Fa, you can travel to Doi Pha Tang in Wiang Kaen district, Chiang Rai province, about 25 kilometers along provincial highway 1093. From Doi Pha Tang, you can continue to Chiang Khong, Chiang Saen, and Mae Sai districts in Chiang Rai province. Phu Chi Fa Forest Park does not provide accommodation or camping facilities for tourists. Visitors wishing to stay overnight must bring their own tents.
The forest park provides designated camping areas with restrooms. Food must be prepared by visitors themselves.
