I've traveled to Chiang Saen many times but never visited Wat Phra That Pha Ngao, only passing by. Today I got information from Marapin that to see the most beautiful view of Chiang Saen, you should pay respects at Phra That Pha Ngao.

The view of Chiang Saen from the top of the chedi is very beautiful. So I climbed up to the Phra Borom Buddha Nimit Chedi. This chedi was built for the lord and queen and was completed just a few years ago. It is still not widely known. To get to the Phra Borom Buddha Nimit Chedi, you must climb the hill behind Wat Phra That Pha Ngao. The path is quite steep. From the top, you can see Chiang Saen, the Mekong River, and the Laos side. If you look carefully, you might see the Golden Triangle as it is less than 10 kilometers away.

Below, there is the very ancient Luang Pho Pha Ngao with traditional lighting that gives a truly sacred atmosphere. When I visited, a nun was meditating quietly for a long time. The ubosot (ordination hall) looks old, and Luang Pho has a sacred and beautiful presence. If you come to Chiang Saen, you should definitely stop to pay respects to Luang Pho Pha Ngao. This ancient Buddha image is located on the west bank of the Mekong River, opposite Laos, in Sop Kham village, Wiang subdistrict, Chiang Saen district, about 3 km south of Chiang Saen town.

It is about 15 km from the Golden Triangle. The area covers 743 rai, mostly small hills stretching from Ban Champi, passing Ban Doi Chan, and ending at Ban Sop Kham. Previously, this hill was called Doi Kham but later locals called it Doi Chan. The temple's name comes from the Phra That Pha Ngao located on a large rock. 'Pha Ngao' means the shadow of the rock. This rock is tall and shaped like a chedi, providing good shade.

Locals named it Phra That Pha Ngao. Originally, before the temple was moved here, it was called Wat Sop Kham, located on the Mekong River bank. The riverbank eroded, causing most of the temple area to collapse into the Mekong River. Devotees then relocated the temple to a new site on a hill not far from the original temple. Historically, during the Yonok Kingdom era, this abandoned temple was at its peak prosperity. It is believed to have been an important temple for the old capital.

The Luang Pho Pha Ngao Buddha image discovered here was built and buried under the large principal Buddha image to hide it from thieves who collect antiques. Initially, it was assumed that this small hill being cleared was an old temple site because many ancient artifacts were scattered around. In February 1976, clearing began. This place was originally a cave called Pha Ngao Cave.

The cave entrance had been closed for a long time, making the area overgrown and full of scattered ancient artifacts. The discovery of the Luang Pho Pha Ngao Buddha image happened on March 17, 1976, at 2:00 PM. After the devotees cleared the area, everyone was excited and joyful to find ancient bricks arranged under a tree stump (in front of the principal Buddha base). When the bricks were removed, a mask was found, revealing a beautiful Buddha image. Experts analyzed it and concluded

that this Buddha image is between 700 and 1,300 years old. The group named this Buddha image Luang Pho Pha Ngao and renamed the temple Wat Phra That Pha Ngao from then on.
