On this trip, I stayed overnight in Chiang Saen and visited the Art Children's Monastery here. Now, let's get to know the main Phra That Chedi Luang. Wat Phra That Chedi Luang in Chiang Saen District is an ancient temple of Chiang Saen city, built by King Saen Phu, the grandson of King Mengrai the Great, the first monarch of the Lanna Thai Kingdom.

In 1344 BE (around the middle of the 19th Buddhist century), King Saen Phu ascended to rule Chiang Mai in place of his father, King Chai Songkhram, who moved to reside in Chiang Rai. He also brought back the remains of his father, King Mengrai the Great, who passed away in Chiang Mai, to Chiang Rai. The name Phra That Chedi Luang comes from the large stupa enshrined in the temple, which is 88 meters tall with a base width of 24 meters.
It is the largest bell-shaped Lanna-style stupa in Chiang Saen. Inside the temple, besides the main stupa, there is an ancient viharn (assembly hall) that has mostly collapsed and various other stupas. Although this historic site has suffered much damage, it has been well restored to reflect its importance as a key temple of Hiran Nakhon Ngern Yang city during the Lanna Thai Kingdom era.
