The surrounding area is a high mound covering approximately 20 rai.

Surrounded by a double-layered canal with a bridge crossing and only one entrance and exit, the people of Chum Phae District call this area "Ku." Before reaching Ku, there is a reclining Buddha carved on stone. Currently, this area is a forest temple. In 1955, around the fourth lunar month, an elderly man came to pay respects to Phra Ratchasan Thammamuni (Luang Pho Kanha), the Provincial Ecclesiastical Head of Khon Kaen at Wat Srinuan. He told that one day he dreamed of an old man dressed in white complaining, "I want to live in the city."
On the second night, he dreamed again saying, "I want to live in the city," and added, "I want to be the guardian spirit of the city." On the third night, he had the same dream again. Upon waking, he felt restless and unable to sleep or decide whom to consult. So he traveled to the city to tell the dream to the ecclesiastical head. The head asked, "What does that place look like?" The old man replied, "It is an old Ku with a large forest, dense trees, many stone pillars, and boundary stones."
The ecclesiastical head then said, "If it is the guardian spirit of the city, it must be the city pillar." Since Khon Kaen Province did not have a city pillar yet, he informed the Khon Kaen governor, Luang Phinit, who assigned Phra Maha Sukon and other monks along with the district officer to bring the city pillar out from the Ku.
During this, heavy rain and lightning struck the city pillar (now the city pillar of Chum Phae District). The vehicle got stuck in a mud pit and could not continue. They agreed, "We are low-ranking officials; since the higher-ups have not come, we will not proceed." They placed the city pillar at Wat Phra Non and returned to report the event to the ecclesiastical head. He then personally brought the pillar, organizing a celebration with traditional Mor Lam music and theater at Wat Phra Non for one night before moving it out. There are four pillars: the first at Khon Kaen City Pillar Shrine, the second at Chum Phae City Pillar Shrine, and the remaining two in front of the ordination hall at Wat Srinuan, Khon Kaen Province.
The city pillar is an octagonal sandstone pillar about 3 meters tall, engraved with Khmer script. The city pillar installation ceremony invited monks to chant and raise the pillar according to Buddhist rites at the Sukhjai Pavilion. The ecclesiastical head named it "San Theparak City Pillar Shrine," abbreviated as "In Ta." The construction was a joint effort of both Chinese and Thai people.
Additionally, the shrine enshrines the spirits of ancestors known as Agong and Ama together with the city pillar. The Chinese call it "Gong City Pillar Shrine," while the Thai call it "City Pillar Shrine." This information was told by Father Jarnon, then the abbot of Wat Srinuan. After completing the shrine, the ecclesiastical head appointed Father Jarnon as the caretaker, a role passed down to his descendants, currently Mr. Sompong Phulputtha.
This sacred and revered place for the people of Khon Kaen is located at Sukhjai Pavilion, Theparak Road, in front of Khon Kaen Municipality. The ecclesiastical head Phra Ratchasan Thammamuni and former Khon Kaen governor Luang Thuranai Phinit initiated its construction by bringing ancient stone inscriptions from archaeological sites in Chum Phae District for Buddhist ceremonies and established the city pillar shrine on August 20, 1956.
Now, the Khon Kaen City Pillar Shrine stands proudly. It is just a short walk from Central Plaza, crossing the railway tracks. When you visit Khon Kaen, don't forget to pay your respects here. .. Mr.Hotsia
