Walking streets in Pai and Chiang Rai, the Kad Kong Ta walking street in Lampang. As for the northeastern provinces, I had never heard of them until Khon Kaen became the first province to open one. Khon Kaen is the capital city of the Northeast region, a major city and a central hub for travel to northeastern provinces. When the walking street was opened, it was well received by the locals who united to create their own colorful walking street. I have walked many walking streets.
I rate Khon Kaen Walking Street on par with the Wualai Walking Street in Chiang Mai. Khon Kaen Walking Street first opened on Saturday, January 30, 2010, with an official opening ceremony on Saturday, March 13, 2010. It is open for selling goods every Saturday evening from 5:00 PM to midnight. The format of Khon Kaen Walking Street is similar to Chiang Mai's but focuses mainly on northeastern products.
The vendor organization is well managed. Vendors have ID cards to control the quality of products and food. What I like about Khon Kaen Walking Street is the string lights hung across the street along the entire walking path for hundreds of meters. I have observed walking streets in many places; if vendors are set on the left, center, and right, people tend to walk closely to the left until the end and then loop back on the left side. If the walking street is small with vendors on both sides, people walk chaotically.
When it's crowded, it looks really busy. Khon Kaen Walking Street is wide, with vendors arranged on the left, center, and right, and people walk orderly on the left side. I even saw officials resting and coordinating via radio for the smooth operation of the walking street. The goods sold mainly focus on Thai and northeastern food, clothing, and handicrafts. The charm of this walking street is that the vendors seem to do it for their province, treating tourists as honored guests with excellent friendly service.
The highlight of Khon Kaen Walking Street I saw was the youth dance performances in the middle of the street, attracting many spectators. Each dancer performed energetically, and the audience cheered and stopped to watch. This type of performance is called 'open hat' shows, giving performers a chance to earn tips. Khon Kaen Walking Street has fewer open hat performances than Chiang Mai. What I expected to see, such as an elderly northeastern man playing the khaen professionally, was not there. It's a pity not to see the khaen in its hometown of Khon Kaen, but Chiang Mai's walking street, home to salo and sueng, surprisingly has the khaen.

Besides the walking street, another must-visit place in Khon Kaen is Wat Nong Waeng (Phra Maha That Kaen Nakhon). Wat Nong Waeng is a beautiful stupa by Bueng Kaen Nakhon. When visiting Khon Kaen, you must visit it. Touring the walking street one day and the stupa the next makes a perfect trip to Khon Kaen. Traimalai, Sombun Klin http://www.siamrath.co.th/?q=node/35670 Should roads be only for cars forever? The more roads there are, the less people love each other. Is it possible to return roads to people as spaces for conversations among those who share similar loves? If the people of Khon Kaen want a walking street to sell handmade goods, unique art, stylish products, and environmentally friendly and energy-saving items, could it be possible?
Along with opening spaces for performances to preserve and promote art and culture for future generations, this idea led to the creation of Khon Kaen Walking Street by Khon Kaen Municipality in collaboration with the Panjamit group. It is held along Salaklang Road, in front of the Khon Kaen Provincial Industry Office to the Khon Kaen Land Office, about 600 meters long. Products are carefully selected, focusing on handmade goods, art, crafts, environmental conservation, and energy-saving items emphasizing creative and charming works.
The municipality allocates space for these products, but general goods that are bought and resold with similar characteristics are not considered. Mr. Peeraphon Patanapiradej, Mayor of Khon Kaen Municipality, said the charm of Khon Kaen Walking Street is that it gives opportunities to art lovers who put heart into each charming piece to showcase and sell their works.
This helps them gain wider recognition. The vendors are friendly and negotiate prices amicably, showing that most sellers on the walking street do not prioritize profit but sell with mutual respect, which is very important for Thai people today to foster good relationships. Khon Kaen Walking Street's charm goes beyond being just a commercial place. Northern Thai sausage and fish sausage at Khon Kaen Walking Street, longan juice at Khon Kaen Walking Street.
The Mayor of Khon Kaen Municipality said Khon Kaen Walking Street first opened on Saturday, January 30, 2010, with an official opening ceremony on Saturday, March 13, 2010. It is open for selling goods every Saturday evening from 5:00 PM to midnight. Initially, there were only 400 vendors, but now there are up to 748 vendors, following informal city council meetings.
People of Khon Kaen gathered to discuss various issues. When the question arose, it became a topic in the council meeting: Are roads only for cars? Because the more roads there are, the more developed it seems, but the less people love each other. Will there be a day when Khon Kaen's roads become walking streets where people can sit and talk in the middle of the street, stroll, and sell or exchange things they like?
The walking street is not just to become another important economic point of the province but to be a gathering place for people who love Barbie dolls to talk about them, or Mini Cooper fans to sit and chat. Deputy Governor Piyabut Promlakkhano parked his car and sold goods, earning only 200 baht a day but proud to talk with fellow Mini Cooper lovers by displaying his Mini Cooper. Indian enthusiasts also express themselves here.
