Ubolratana Dam is about 1.5 hours by car from Khon Kaen. The road entrance gradually slopes upward. This area is also the Ubolratana district center.
There are two zones: the lower zone is the lake above the dam with dozens of floating restaurants. Locals from Khon Kaen like to sit here, eat, drink beer and liquor, and swim. The other zone is up on the dam crest where people live and there are accommodations, but I only visited for sightseeing. To imagine the size, the lake above Ubolratana Dam stretches 30 kilometers long and about 13 kilometers wide at the spot where I sat eating som tum looking diagonally across.
This dam is also called Nam Phong Dam because it dams the Nam Phong River, which later joins the Bat River to become the Chi River. So the Chi River originates from Nam Phong Dam. Mr.hotsia finished touring the dam and drove north along Highway 2146 to Nong Bua Lamphu, then drove to stay overnight in Udon. Leaving Khon Kaen in the morning, touring along the way, and staying overnight in Udon leaves plenty of time.
