Over ten years ago, I visited Kaeng Krachan many times because it is not far from Bangkok.

I once organized a caravan to release giant catfish at Kaeng Krachan. This time when I returned, I asked if there were any giant catfish caught. The locals said they do catch large ones, and some restaurants sell them. It’s truly a pride that this helps the locals have naturally grown giant catfish from the Kaeng Krachan Dam. Over ten years, the fish should have grown quite large. I don’t know how many batches or if the government has released more. I came on this trip to Kaeng Krachan because a friend from grade 9 had relatives who opened accommodation by the Phetch River called Baan Khun Usa Homestay. So I visited and took the opportunity to revisit Kaeng Krachan after a long time.
Today, Kaeng Krachan has a 7-Eleven, fresh food restaurants with free wifi, and a few new accommodations including Vimannam Resort where I watched people fishing. On this trip, I ate local favorite dishes at Tonson Kitchen and took a walk along the dam ridge where I once biked.
But the most impressive thing was the large giant catfish caught continuously by the locals here. I recommend this activity if you visit Kaeng Krachan: in the afternoon after checking in, swim in the Phetch River; in the evening, enjoy the dam ridge view; after dark, dine at Tonson Kitchen; then sleep well. Early morning, if it’s the tourist season when Pha Nern Thung is open (except August, September, October), you can hire a car to go up Pha Nern Thung to see the sea of mist. After descending, take a shower and prepare to leave, possibly stopping at various places as you like.
Don’t forget to stop for breakfast at the recommended local and affordable restaurants. Most accommodations in Kaeng Krachan are by the Phetch River. The Phetch River after the upper Phetch River in the Kaeng Krachan forest is dammed and then released downstream as the Phetch River again. On both sides of the upper Phetch River, there are several accommodations right by the water with swimming and slides, so you can choose to stay conveniently. Another option is accommodations not by the river but are resorts or large hotels.
These include Rang Raeng Resort, Rim Kaeng Resort, Fahsai Riverview Accommodation, Rai Suksangchan Resort, Nana Resort and Spa, Chatphet Resort, Thanatthicha Buri Lake Resort and Spa. Booking through Agoda offers cheaper prices than walk-ins. Wherever you stay, activities in Kaeng Krachan are quite similar. Booking Kaeng Krachan hotels in advance is cheaper than walk-in. The local food in Kaeng Krachan is a must-try, especially large dam fish.
At Kaeng Krachan, the Nile tilapia are very large, grilled and sold in front of the 7-Eleven Kaeng Krachan for 150 baht each, which I think is cheap for such a big fish. There is also papaya salad sold in front of the 7-Eleven. For dinner, I recommend Tonson Kitchen. In the morning, wake up for coffee and check email a bit, then eat at a local curry rice restaurant near the district office to get the feeling of being part of Kaeng Krachan. Actually, there are many restaurants by the dam to watch the sunset and have dinner.
That time I didn’t go because my friend wanted me to try Tonson Kitchen. Maybe next time. Traveling to Kaeng Krachan used to require a long explanation, but now I’ll keep it short: just use GPS and follow the route. It’s not difficult anymore in this era. I want to share one article to read: whether Thai or foreign travelers, prepare by pinning tourist spots, accommodations, and restaurants so you can travel without internet and not get lost.
