I have long heard the reputation of the Tak Bat Thewo ceremony at Khao Wang in Phetchaburi Province because when the monks walk down to receive alms, it feels like they are descending from heaven. I chose to stay at Khao Wang Hotel so I wouldn't have to wake up early. After waking up, I could come and enjoy the atmosphere of the locals doing the alms offering. But in reality, I was busy working and missed the moment when the monks walked down from the hill. However, I managed to capture general photos of the Tak Bat Thewo ceremony in Phetchaburi to share with you.

After the Tak Bat Thewo ceremony, I relaxed at a coffee shop behind Khao Wang in the morning, ordered traditional coffee and soft-boiled eggs, and enjoyed the morning atmosphere as locals went about their day. This made my trip even more perfect. Mr.Hotsia October 2011. The ceremony means making merit by offering alms on the waning moon day of the 1st night of the 11th lunar month, commemorating the Buddha's descent from the heavenly realm. The word 'Thewo' is a shortened form of 'Theworohana' (Thewa + Orohan), meaning the descent from the heavenly world. The story goes that during the seventh year after enlightenment, the Buddha went to reside in the Tavatimsa heaven to preach to his mother, who had been reborn as a deity in the Tusita heaven, until she attained the first stage of enlightenment. After the rainy season retreat on the full moon day of the 11th lunar month, he descended from the heavenly world at the city of Sankassa. At the time of his descent, the hills were united as one up to the Brahma world. Looking down, the same hill extended down to the great hell Avici. Looking in all directions, the universe, countless in number, had hills united as one. Deities could see humans, humans could see deities, and hell beings could see both humans and deities, all visible to each other at once. Then the Buddha emitted the six supernatural rays while descending from the Tavatimsa heaven. The next day, the waning moon day of the 1st night of the 11th lunar month, the townspeople made great merit by offering alms because they had not seen the Buddha for three months. This alms offering on that day was named Tak Bat Theworohana.
