Phrae City, a Livable City

The number one must-visit when arriving in Phrae Province is still Phra That Chae Hae, located ten kilometers from Phrae town. Pay respects and make wishes upon arriving in Phrae. This stupa is the sacred relic for those born in the Year of the Tiger. Both tourists and locals frequently visit. It is my top recommendation for Buddhist travelers. Number two is waking up early to stroll around Phrae town. I myself woke up and took a tricycle ride to explore the town. Phrae is clean, orderly, and the streets are very well arranged.
The highlight is the traditional wooden houses seen everywhere. Taking a tricycle tour is what Mr.Hotsia recommends. Then visit the morning market to eat red pork rice, crispy pork, and duck rice at the famous Nong Metta restaurant. Number three is the Phrae Walking Street, held every first Sunday of the month on Charoen Muang Road. The charm of Phrae Walking Street I noticed is the local folk singers playing salo and sueng instruments, but they are not on the main stage in the middle of the walking street; instead, they hide at the end near the city gate.
I think this is the charm of northern walking streets from a tourist’s perspective like Mr.Hotsia. But for locals, it’s probably just right. Phrae Walking Street has two large music stages and does not focus on cultural sales like Lampang's Kad Kong Ta. Number four is the Pratu Chai Night Market, where you can see how Phrae people live. This market has many delicious food stalls, both sweet and savory. Many locals sit and eat here. It’s a charm I personally like.
You get to understand how Phrae people live. I also had very delicious fried mussels here and the best Salim ice cream with crispy ruby. I rank this as the fourth highlight of visiting Phrae. Number five includes many famous past attractions such as Ban Prathapjai, Ban Wongburi, the house of the first wife of the last lord of Phrae, and Phae Muang Phi, as well as the teak wood market on the way to Den Chai and the Mo Hom fabric at Thung Hong village.
You can visit all in just three hours. My favorite attraction is Ban Wongburi, with an entrance fee of 30 baht and a guide explaining the history. I rank this as the top must-see. Phae Muang Phi is not much, but the grilled chicken there is delicious. The Isan food there suits my taste very well. When visiting Phae Muang Phi, don’t forget to try the grilled chicken. For hotels in Phrae, I stayed at Nakhon Phrae Hotel.
An old hotel located opposite the shrine and next to the walking street. It’s convenient to go to Pratu Chai Night Market and to stroll in the morning on Charoen Muang Road without needing to drive. Just cross the shrine to get there. The price is 350 baht per night. The room has air conditioning and wifi, but the wifi is slow and weak, especially on the third floor. Hot water is provided. For those who bring their own car and want a more comfortable stay, I recommend the new Nakhon Phrae Tower Hotel or Maeyom Palace Hotel.
Prices are around a thousand baht. The hotels are good and beautiful but not located on the walking street. I recommend checking the hotel map and booking in advance, especially during long holidays.
