There are two ways to explore Sukhothai Historical Park: one is by car, the other is by bicycle. For accommodation, it is recommended to stay near the park and rent a bicycle to tour. You can stay at Sukhothai Hostel and ride a bicycle across the canal towards the park. Alternatively, book accommodation or hotels in Sukhothai before your visit.
Sukhothai Historical Park covers the ancient site of the Sukhothai Kingdom, the administrative center of the Sukhothai Kingdom which held power in the lower northern region of Thailand during the 18th-19th Buddhist centuries. It is located in Mueang Kao Subdistrict (Mueang Kao Municipality), Mueang Sukhothai District, Sukhothai Province, about 12 kilometers west of the current Sukhothai town (Sukhothai Thani Municipality) along Highway No. 12 (Chorad Witthithong Road).
The layout of Sukhothai city is rectangular, approximately 2 kilometers long and 1.6 kilometers wide, with city gates located at the center of each city wall side. Inside, there are remains of the royal palace and 26 temples. The largest temple is Wat Mahathat. This park has been restored by the Fine Arts Department with assistance from UNESCO. It attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, who can explore on foot or by bicycle.
Sukhothai Historical Park was first officially protected by the Royal Gazette, Volume 92, Part 112, dated August 2, 1961. Later in 1976, the restoration project was approved and officially opened in July 1988. On December 12, 1991 [citation needed], UNESCO declared this park a World Heritage Site along with the historical parks of Kamphaeng Phet and Si Satchanalai under the name
"Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns".
