Ubon Province, or Ubon Ratchathani, is a major province in lower Isan and serves as a gateway to southern Laos entering Pakse city on the Laos side. Today, we introduce another route for those traveling from Ubon to Laos: taking the bus from Ubon to Mukdahan.
For travelers seeking more travel options, the popular choice is Sahamit buses. This long-established company runs from Ubon along Chayangkul Road through Muang Sam Sip District in Amnat Charoen Province, Loeng Nok Tha District, Nikom Kham Soi, and finally to Mukdahan. The journey takes about 3-4 hours. Upon arrival at Mukdahan bus terminal, you can transfer to international buses crossing into Laos at Savannakhet. Buses cross to Laos every hour from morning to evening, costing 45 baht. A small tip: sometimes the bus name or front sign may not be straightforward.
This is because Sahamit's bus routes extend to final destinations like Sakon Nakhon, Udon Thani, or Nakhon Phanom. Check the route maps I photographed, as Sahamit's routes connect key strategic cities serving as Thai-Laos border crossings, from southern Ubon, Mukdahan with its Friendship Bridge on the main route to Savannakhet, continuing along Route 9 to Hue, Danang, Hoi An, and Nakhon Phanom crossing to Thakhek on the Laos side.
A new Mekong Friendship Bridge is under construction. Lastly, Udon Thani in the north has international buses crossing Nong Khai Friendship Bridge into Vientiane. Actually, this route from Ubon, including Laos entry, is even cheaper than going from Ubon to Pakse. Ubon to Pakse (Laos) costs 200 baht, while Ubon to Mukdahan costs 135 baht plus Mukdahan to Savannakhet 45 baht = 180 baht. Remember to update travel expenses before your trip.
Ticket prices change frequently due to fluctuating fuel costs. Sahamit Ubon's address and contact: 224 Moo 11, Sukha Phatthana Road, Kham Yai Subdistrict, Mueang District, Ubon Ratchathani 34000. The bus schedule is printed on handy small sheets, convenient for travelers seeking information. Other bus companies should consider this as a good example. Sahamit ticket booth is on the right side after entering the bus terminal, near the coffee shop. Sahamit route map extends beyond Mukdahan to Ban Tong, Na Kae, Sakon, Phang Khon, Sawang Daen Din, Udon, and another route to That Phanom and Nakhon Phanom. (For visiting Phra That Phanom, get off at That Phanom District because the temple is not in the city district.)
Lost and found: This company seriously announces lost items. Freight rates for sending goods via bus. Sample ticket from Ubon to Mukdahan costs 135 baht (January 2011). Even if the front sign says Udon, the bus passes through Mukdahan, so don't be alarmed.
