A small town by the Mekong River with old houses and small communities along less than 2 kilometers of the riverside. The town is on a parallel road, not directly on the Mekong River. I think for safety reasons, people don’t stay right by the river. I've heard of boats stealing items, even motorcycles loaded onto boats in some places. What impressed me in Khemarat district is the Khemarat-style papaya salad, a spicy Isan-style with lots of chili, very delicious, especially with grilled chicken. There is also a beautiful viewpoint along the Mekong River in Khemarat.
Accommodation in Khemarat costs about 300-500 Baht per night. The best place I saw while driving around is Ban Kong Phaniang, a Thai-style house restaurant-resort located in town, suitable for both those with and without vehicles. It’s a highly recommended restaurant and accommodation with WiFi, right by the Mekong River with beautiful views. Another newer place in town, but not in the walking zone, is called Lae Khong. I think Lae Khong looks elegant and luxurious, ideal for those with cars for convenience. When I visited, it was fully booked. Khemarat is a 200-year-old riverside town on the Mekong.
For those wanting to experience a peaceful, natural lifestyle and learn about the way of life of the local Isan people, I recommend staying in Khemarat for about a week. If I have the chance, I will return to stay several days to truly get to know the locals. This is my style of travel.
