The Mekong River doesn’t just flow from Loei to Ubon. It enters Thailand at Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai Province, then exits Thailand at Wiang Kaen, Chiang Rai Province. After that, it re-enters the Thai-Lao border at Loei and flows out at Khong Chiam. Khong Chiam is a small district where locals traditionally fish for giant catfish, similar to Chiang Khong. From my experience, food here is more expensive than other places, especially dishes made from Mekong River fish. If you take a boat trip, be prepared for high prices.
People stay in Khong Chiam partly because they continue their trip to Pha Taem and Sao Chaliang to watch the sunrise in the morning. There isn’t much in Khong Chiam town itself. There is a karaoke zone where many men come to enjoy nightlife. Several karaoke bars are located near the Mun River bridge. When I stayed in Khong Chiam, I stayed at Baan Suan Rim Nam Resort, a two-story house by the river. It was peaceful and right on the river. Accommodation in Khong Chiam costs about 500-600 baht per night if run by locals in town.
In the town area, you can walk to 7-11 because food here is a bit pricey, so convenience stores are a good option. For riverside resort-style accommodation, I already recommended Baan Suan Rim Nam. Tourist spots in Khong Chiam town include crossing the Mun River and turning left to a viewpoint for giant catfish. Here live the Bru ethnic group, people of Mon-Khmer descent who came from Salavan during the war. The Bru live in the village of Weon Buk, Khong Chiam District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. The Bru language is similar to Khmer. The Bru have traditionally fished in the Mekong River since ancient times.
Visiting Khong Chiam is not just about seeing Pha Taem; exploring Bru culture is also very interesting. Besides fishing, the Bru people weave baskets to sell and farm. They have preserved their language and culture to this day.
