Walking on Doi Inthanon Summit: Experience the breath of Thailand's highest mountain
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to experience something special at Doi Inthanon, Chiang Mai Province. It is the highest mountain in Thailand, reaching 2,565 meters above sea level, which is twice the height of Phu Kradueng. For travelers who love cool weather all year round, even during the hot summer in Bangkok, the summit of Doi Inthanon is so cold that you almost need to wear a jacket.
Traveling up Doi Inthanon is easier than many think. I drove a sedan comfortably without needing a pickup or 4WD. The road is paved and well-signposted, so there's no worry about getting lost or difficult driving. Plus, the views along the way are beautiful, perfect for those who want to enjoy nature without strenuous hiking.
Three Must-Visit Places on Doi Inthanon
If you come to Doi Inthanon, I, mr.hotsia, recommend these main attractions that everyone should experience at least once in their life.
1. Doi Inthanon Summit
The highest point in Thailand. Here, you can experience the atmosphere of the cloud forest that covers the summit year-round. I walked along the Ang Ka Nature Trail, feeling like stepping into a heavenly forest. Large trees covered with moss and various ferns. Nature photographers must not miss this spot.
2. Phra That Naphamethinidon and Naphaphonphumisiri
Before reaching the summit, you will find these twin pagodas, important landmarks of Doi Inthanon. Built by the Royal Thai Air Force as a royal merit offering, the site features beautiful gardens and ancient roses. Visiting here gave me a sense of peace and renewed energy. The entrance fee is only 40 baht, which is very reasonable considering the beauty and significance.
3. Mae Ya Waterfall and Sirithan Waterfall
After exploring the summit and pagodas, don't forget to visit the refreshing waterfalls. Mae Ya Waterfall is the most famous on Doi Inthanon, with clear, cool water and a shady atmosphere. If you prefer a smaller waterfall with a short walk, I recommend Sirithan Waterfall at kilometer 22.5, which also has a nature trail for walking.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle Around Doi Inthanon
Besides the natural beauty, the area around Doi Inthanon has interesting hill tribe communities. I had the chance to talk with locals, mostly Karen and Hmong people, who still maintain traditional lifestyles including organic vegetable farming and hand weaving. This allowed me, as a tourist, to learn more about the diverse and charming tribal cultures.
If you want to try local food, I recommend stopping byJaeng Muang Restaurantin Mae Chaem District, which is not far from Doi Inthanon. I have eaten here many times because their Khao Soi is very delicious. The restaurant atmosphere is perfect for relaxing or planning your next trip comfortably. Mae Chaem is a small town with charm and increasing tourism, making it a great rest stop on this route.
How to Get There and Tips from mr.hotsia
For traveling to Doi Inthanon, I used a private car from Chiang Mai city, driving along Highways 1009 and 108 through Chom Thong District to Doi Inthanon. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The roads are excellent with no travel problems and clear signs all along the way.
My tip is to bring warm clothes because the summit is cold all year round, even in summer. Also, wear suitable shoes for walking in the forest or nature trails. Don't forget to carry water and snacks as some spots may not have food stalls or shops.
If you want to extend your trip, I recommend visitingWat Saen Thong, Omkoiwhich is not far from the route to Doi Inthanon. This temple has an interesting history and houses Phra Chao Saen Thong, highly revered by locals. It is another place I like to visit to learn about local culture and history.
