Doi Chua Ya Inthanon: Camping at Thailand's Highest Mountain Peak
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to discover and experienceDoi Chua Yaalso known by many asIntanon Camping ParkThis place is located on the summit of Doi Inthanon, Chiang Mai Province, the highest mountain in Thailand at over 2,565 meters. This spot is one of the camping areas of the Hmong hill tribe, offering beautiful scenery and a cool atmosphere all year round.
I have traveled up Doi Inthanon many times but usually only for day trips without the chance to stay overnight. This time, I planned to camp on the mountain to fully experience the natural atmosphere for 24 hours. I must say, it was a unique experience with challenging cold and the sound of rain hitting the tent throughout the night in October when I visited.
Travel and Preparation
For those who want to try sleeping onDoi Inthanonlike me, I recommend preparing your equipment well, especially warm clothing and suitable bedding. During the rainy and cold season, the park's bedding services are not fully available. I didn’t bring a blanket or sleeping bag, relying solely on my physical and mental strength.
It is very important not to bring charcoal stoves or electric stoves into the tent under any circumstances. The high altitude and enclosed camping area can cause suffocation if you fall asleep while using charcoal stoves, which can be fatal. I want to emphasize this strongly: do not be careless.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle at Doi Chua Ya
Upon arriving at Doi Chua Ya, I encountered a Hmong village where people still live naturally and simply. The villagers’ lifestyle is deeply connected to nature and the mountains. Interestingly, the camping site is located on a high hill with a clear view ofSiriphum Waterfallwhich is famous and rare to find such a view elsewhere, making camping here even more special.
In the evening before sunset, I explored the area and talked with locals and fellow campers. Many said they had visited Doi Inthanon several times but never experienced this atmosphere. Camping on the mountain made them feel closer to nature and truly learn about the hill tribe lifestyle.
Challenges of Camping on Doi Inthanon
The night I camped at Doi Chua Ya, it rained heavily almost all night. The sound of rain hitting the tent was unlike anything I had heard before. It made me feel calm and strangely happy. Water flowed beneath the tent like sleeping by a river, but I had to be careful not to get too wet because the cold was intense, especially without a blanket or sleeping bag.
Although I had to wear multiple jackets to keep warm, the next morning I saw soft sunlight shining through thick fog covering the mountain peak. It was a beautiful sight worth all the exhaustion and challenges.
Connection to Chiang Mai Tourism
Visiting Doi Chua Ya is not just about nature. Chiang Mai has many other interesting attractions that I have visited and would recommend, such asSan Thong Amkoi Templewhich houses the revered Phra Chao San Thong, or you can stop byJaeng Muang Restaurantin Mae Chaem, a small town behind Doi Inthanon, perfect for a break to enjoy traditional Northern Thai food before continuing your journey.
If you like unhurried travel and want to truly experience life on this high mountain, camping at Doi Chua Ya is the best choice. It made me feel closer to nature and understand the Hmong hill tribe’s way of life much more deeply.
