Wiang Haeng, a peaceful town embraced by nature north of Pai
If you have ever traveled toPaiduring the winter, you know how crowded it is there, with streets full of people and even having to compete for fuel to the point of almost causing conflicts. But for me, mr.hotsia, Wiang Haeng is a completely different world. This town is located about 59 kilometers north of Pai on a quieter and simpler route. Wiang Haeng is not an easy destination for everyone because the road is still inconvenient, so it doesn't attract many foreign tourists like Pai. But for those who love peace and nature, this town is a hidden gem yet to be fully discovered.
Wiang Haeng is a town that still firmly preserves the Tai Yai way of life. Although there are some Lisu people, they are a minority. The locals still live a simple lifestyle that I rarely see in big cities. Visiting here feels like traveling across to Chiang Tung in Myanmar because the culture and atmosphere are surprisingly similar. There is no chaos, no bright lights or noise to disturb you, only thick cold morning fog and mountain views stretching as far as the eye can see.
The route to Wiang Haeng and the travel atmosphere
I tried to visit Wiang Haeng for the second time after the first attempt was canceled due to heavy rain that made the route through Muang Na impassable. This time, I chose the route from Chiang Dao, turning left directly toward Wiang Haeng, which was better and easier to drive than other routes I had tried. Although the road has many curves like the way to Pai, the open road and few cars made the journey more convenient and enjoyable.
Along the way, there are several viewpoints to stop and rest. The views of Wiang Haeng town and surrounding mountains are very beautiful. Every time I stopped to take pictures, I felt like my heart was resting too. The thick morning fog in Wiang Haeng creates a chilling and dreamy atmosphere. Especially if you visit during the winter like me, you can fully experience this refreshing feeling.
Tai Yai lifestyle and culture in Wiang Haeng
Wiang Haeng's highlight is being home to the Tai Yai people. I had the chance to join the Tan Khuay Salak ceremony at Sri Muang Mai Temple in the morning. This event is a traditional ritual that locals still strongly preserve. I felt the deep bond between people, nature, and genuine traditions untouched by outside cultures.
There is also Fa Wiang In Temple, which is special because it is jointly owned by Thailand and Myanmar. I walked around the temple and learned about the history connecting these two countries deeply, giving a clear picture of cultural and historical relations in this region.
In the evening, I experienced the Poi Thian festival at the temple, an annual event of the Tai Yai people featuring beautiful and unique stage dances and performances. The Jad Tai dance I watched combines elements of likay and Burmese dance styles that I have never seen anywhere else. It was an unforgettable cultural experience.
Piang Luang village and the border that still holds its original charm
If you want to fully experience the Tai Yai atmosphere, I recommend driving about 3 kilometers past Wiang Haeng to Piang Luang village, a Tai Yai community that still preserves traditional ways of life and living very well. The atmosphere here is peaceful and the air is very fresh, like stepping into another world.
Previously, this area was a temporary border checkpoint, but it is now closed because the Myanmar government has reorganized ethnic groups in the area. This also caused Fa Wiang In Temple to be split between the two countries as I mentioned earlier.
Accommodation in Wiang Haeng and living like a local
I stayed atSringkarn Hut Wiang Haengwhich is accommodation located near Wiang Haeng town with free WiFi and a friendly atmosphere. On the first night, I chose to stay here because it was convenient and close to restaurants and a small market in town.
For the second and third nights, I stayed elsewhere in town where there are not many resorts yet but enough for travelers who prefer less bustle. Most accommodations still focus on simplicity and naturalness, suitable for those wanting to escape the noise of big cities.
Wiang Haeng in mr.hotsia's eyes
For me, Wiang Haeng is not a second Pai, not Mae Chaem with its terraced rice fields, nor Ban Huak with its fresh air. It is truly Wiang Haeng itself. Here, there is peace, beautiful nature, and Tai Yai culture worth studying. I have been here twice and still want to come back many times because every visit refreshes my heart, lets me experience genuine lifestyles, and reveals deeper insights beyond casual tourism.
If you love nature, peace, and want to escape the chaos of Pai, I recommend you tryWiang Haengonce, and you will feel like me, mr.hotsia, that this place is a hidden happiness in Chiang Mai.
Don't forget to visitFa Wiang In Templeand if you're interested in more natural travel routes in Chiang Mai, I have stories fromthe Doi Tao lake ruinswhich are equally fascinating.
