Experience the charm of the Poy Tian Festival of the Tai Yai at Piang Luang, Chiang Mai

When talking about traditions filled with community warmth and the vibrant culture of the Tai Yai in Chiang Mai province, the Poy Tian Festival, locally called "Poy Tiao Festival," is one of the annual events I, Mr.Hotsia, had the opportunity to attend personally at Piang Luang village, Wiang Haeng district, which was an unforgettable experience.

The Poy Tian Festival of the Tai Yai here differs from other traditions I have encountered in the genuine cooperation of the entire village and neighboring villages who come together to celebrate sincerely and joyfully. The highlight is the six 6-meter tall straw candles placed around the event area. When guests from various villages arrive, the hosts light all six candles simultaneously, symbolizing a grand and beautiful welcoming ceremony.

One of my most memorable moments was watching the authentic Tai Yai bird dance, which is rare to see nowadays. The dancers wear mystical masks with unique characteristics. Before starting the dance, they perform a gesture resembling the four-direction salutation similar to Thai boxing art, reflecting the Tai Yai people's respect and beliefs. A dancer I spoke with shared that he used to see this bird dance casually in his hometown of Kengtung, but after moving to Thailand, he found very few dancers left, so he has been dedicated to preserving and teaching this art to the younger generation.

Another special feature of the festival is the Jad Tai dance, performed only at major Poy Luang events. This performance was something I eagerly anticipated because it is unique and so distinctive that an outsider like me was amazed by its beauty and the power of this dance art. If I have the chance next year, I will definitely record photos and videos to share with everyone.

The lifestyle of the Tai Yai people in Piang Luang is also reflected in maintaining peace during the festival through a village police system selected by the community. Each household has a designated police officer to help ensure safety during the event, allowing me to stroll around and take photos comfortably without worrying about any disturbances. This is another charm of this small, caring community that I greatly admire.

Regarding food at the Poy Tian Festival, I tasted sticky rice dumplings that villagers each prepared about 10 bundles to distribute to guests in abundance. It felt like receiving a heartfelt welcome from the hosts. Each participating village also prepared their own performances on stage, filling the atmosphere with music and smiles from everyone enjoying the event together.

For travelers interested in deeply experiencing the lifestyle and culture of the Tai Yai, I recommend planning a visit during the Poy Tian Festival at Piang Luang. Besides rare performances and rituals, you will learn about the warm relationships within the community. Additionally, you can visit nearby attractions such asDoi Tao Lake Ruinswhich offers beautiful natural views and interesting stories, or if you want to experience Lanna culture deeply, you can stop bySan Thong Amkoi Templewhich houses Phra Chao San Thong, the spiritual center of the local people.

Traveling to Piang Luang and Wiang Haeng is not difficult. Although the route is winding and passes some steep mountains, upon arrival you will find unique tranquility and natural beauty. I once stopped atJaeng Muang Restaurantin Mae Chaem, not far from this route. This restaurant is a good rest stop to recharge with delicious Northern Thai food before continuing to Piang Luang.

The Poy Tian Festival at Piang Luang is more than just a tradition. It tells the story of the Tai Yai people's way of life, who still preserve their identity and strong community bonds. If you are looking for a travel experience beyond just nature sightseeing, but also to absorb culture and the warmth of the people, I, Mr.Hotsia, guarantee that the Poy Tian Festival will leave you with unforgettable impressions.
