Phrao, a peaceful town nestled among the valleys of Chiang Mai

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Phrao District in Chiang Mai Province, a town that many may have heard of in passing but few really talk about or know well. Phrao is located in the middle of the mountains, making travel quite challenging as you have to cross mountains from both Chiang Dao and Wiang Pa Pao. This makes it feel like a hidden town that remains peaceful with a unique charm I want to sincerely share.

Phrao is not a big city or a tourist hotspot crowded with visitors, but for those who love tranquility, a community lifestyle that remains natural, and old wooden houses, Phrao fits perfectly. Most houses are still old wooden homes that are rare to find. Even Pai, which was once a small town like this, is changing a lot, but Phrao has managed to keep its simplicity very well.

Strolling the Phrao Night Market

When I visited in the evening, I strolled through the night market. It's a small market with not many food options but has some interesting spots, like a small grilled pork restaurant that people talk about. I also tried Anamai roti, a unique dish in this market. Walking around gave me a chill atmosphere, like wandering in a small town where everyone knows each other.

Although there aren't many restaurants, I found the people here very kind and warm. This atmosphere reminded me of when I traveled toOmkoiAnother remote town in Chiang Mai with a similarly simple and friendly atmosphere.

Comfortable and Affordable Accommodation

For accommodation in Phrao, I chose to stay at 83 Bungalow, a small bungalow-style hotel with individual houses priced at about 300 baht per night. They offer Wifi service, though in the morning the speed can be slow and sometimes disconnects, but it's acceptable for travelers who want a comfortable and quiet stay. This place is perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle and relax in a truly homey atmosphere.

If anyone wants a more luxurious stay, Phrao also has other options, but prices are higher and some places still have uncertain internet quality.

Riverside Lifestyle and Wooden House Market

Phrao is located in a valley surrounded by nature and the Ping River. The locals’ lifestyle remains closely connected to nature and the river. From walking around the market and houses, I felt a strong and simple community spirit. Most residents still live traditionally, with small shops scattered along the main roads of the district.

Not far from Phrao, if you are interested in nature and history, I recommend visitingDoi Tao Lake RuinsThis area was once flooded due to the construction of the Bhumibol Dam, but now it has become an interesting tourist spot as the water has receded, revealing the ruins of a submerged pagoda.

Phrao and Traveling in Chiang Mai

Traveling to Phrao is not very easy. If coming from Chiang Dao, you must cross mountains and prepare carefully for the route. Coming from Wiang Pa Pao also requires crossing mountains. However, if you travel leisurely, enjoy photography, and love beautiful mountain views along the way, driving this route is a worthwhile experience.

Phrao is also a central point that allows convenient travel to other districts like Mae Chaem or Omkoi. Mae Chaem itself has interesting cafes and restaurants such asJaeng Muang Restaurantwhich I have visited many times. Whenever I travel to Mae Chaem, I always stop here to recharge.

The Peace Found in a Remote Town

What impressed me most about Phrao is the peace and naturalness that still remain. Although it is a district not frequented by many tourists, the warmth of the locals and the small town atmosphere in the valley made me feel truly rested, not just passing through.

If you are looking for a quiet place to visit in Chiang Mai, not far from the city, and want to experience authentic local life, I, mr.hotsia, recommend stopping by Phrao once. I guarantee you will gain new feelings and great memories.
