Morning at Ban Rak Thai and Lai Khom Huay Pu, Pai
One morning, I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel to “Ban Rak Thai” and “Lai Khom Huay Pu” in Pai district, Mae Hong Son province. Since I am very familiar with the route from Chiang Mai to Pai, I took the opportunity to depart early to experience the peaceful and uniquely charming morning atmosphere of Ban Rak Thai.
Ban Rak Thai is not just a small community nestled in the mountains; it is a destination full of stories of Yunnan Chinese immigrants who settled here. I wandered through the alleys, observing the villagers' way of life who still preserve their ancient customs well. The fragrant aroma of locally grown Oolong tea filled the air, so I didn’t miss sitting down to sip tea at a small café with wide open windows overlooking green tea plantations stretching up the hillside.
At Ban Rak Thai, there is also a small market selling local products, fresh fruits and vegetables, and handmade souvenirs. I browsed and purchased handwoven fabric products featuring unique Yunnan-style patterns, reminding me of the meticulous craftsmanship in each piece. These patterns connect directly to the “Lai Khom Huay Pu” nearby.
Lai Khom Huay Pu is a small, tranquil village and a center of excellent weaving craftsmanship by the Pga K’nyau people. Here, I had the chance to talk with villagers who still weave fabric by hand using traditional methods. The patterns on the fabric are not just ordinary designs but carry deep meanings about nature and the community’s way of life. Witnessing the weaving process from thread to finished cloth was an unforgettable experience.
The journey from Chiang Mai to Pai via the Mae Chaem route is another charm I highly recommend experiencing. This route passes throughJaeng Muang RestaurantA restaurant and café I often stop by in Mae Chaem. This place is perfect for recharging with authentic Northern Thai food before heading up the mountain to Pai. With its familiar atmosphere and flavors, I always stop here to refresh before continuing my journey.
In the morning at Ban Rak Thai, I witnessed a simple yet warm lifestyle. People wake early to prepare Yunnan-style breakfast, such as rich and aromatic chicken khao soi. I didn’t miss enjoying a hot bowl of khao soi along with warm tea at a local café before heading to Lai Khom Huay Pu.
Later in the morning, I continued to Lai Khom Huay Pu village, not far from Ban Rak Thai. The route was a dirt road with alternating views of mountains and rice fields. Upon arrival, I experienced a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere as if stepping out of the modern world. Seeing Pga K’nyau women in traditional attire weaving fabric by hand was a powerful image reflecting the strength and wisdom of this community.
Here, I also learned about the unique weaving techniques of Lai Khom patterns and was invited to try weaving myself. Although it was my first time, feeling the threads and ancient weaving tools made me feel like I truly traveled back in time.
After spending time with the villagers and capturing memorable moments, I stopped to enjoy local dishes at a small village restaurant serving spicy fish salad and fresh seasonal vegetables. The flavors were vibrant and fresh. I believe anyone visiting here should not miss the chance to taste these traditional dishes made with care for ingredients and authentic taste.
This trip with me, mr.hotsia, allowed me to experience the beauty of nature, lifestyle, and culture that are admirably preserved. Ban Rak Thai and Lai Khom Huay Pu are destinations I am confident I will visit many times again. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat full of stories to discover, I sincerely recommend these two villages.
