Travel to Mae Chaem, Pa Bong Piang, Hug Khao at Mae Chaem, Eating Chiang Mai Basil by mr.hotsia

Mae Chaem, Chiang Mai Province, is a small town that quietly hides much tranquility and natural charm. For me, mr.hotsia, coming here to stroll feels like escaping the hustle of the big city, breathing fresh air, enjoying mountain views and light mist. The cool weather invites an incredible sense of peace.

The route to Mae Chaem is dirt roads with gentle mountain curves, passing rice fields and small villages that still maintain traditional local lifestyles. I love seeing villagers planting vegetables, tending fruit gardens, and children running in the fields. This simplicity is something you can't find in big cities.

Pa Bong Piang, the magical corner of Mae Chaem

One place I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend is “Pa Bong Piang,” a famous terraced rice field viewpoint in Chiang Mai. Pa Bong Piang is located in Mae Chaem district where I saw lush green rice fields stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s so beautiful it looks like a painting created by nature. Just walking down into the fields lets you smell the earth and growing rice, accompanied by birdsong as your travel companion.

I suggest going in the morning to capture the sunrise hiding behind the mountains. If you're lucky, you might see farmers working closely in the terraced fields, which is a very impressive experience. Hug Khao at Mae Chaem: Lifestyle and culture not to be missed

“Hug Khao,” or love for the mountains and nature, is the phrase I, mr.hotsia, use to express my feelings about Mae Chaem. Here, not only are the views beautiful, but the mountain people's warm and friendly lifestyles are abundant. I had the chance to talk with many locals who shared stories about vegetable and rice farming and forest care, which they take great pride in.

Besides that, Mae Chaem also has small, peaceful temples such asWat Saen Thong Omkoiwhich I have visited. These temples reflect the wisdom and beliefs of the local people very well. Additionally, Mae Chaem is close to other natural attractions like Ob Luang with its monkey bridge and beautiful rock cliffs. If anyone is interested in natural trails near Mae Chaem, try visiting these spots.

Eating Chiang Mai Basil, purely at Mae Chaem

Regarding food in Mae Chaem, I, mr.hotsia, can say it’s very enjoyable. There may not be as many restaurants as in big cities, but each place truly cares about flavor and local ingredients. The restaurant I often visit isJang Muang Restaurantwhich is a famous Mae Chaem spot suitable for travelers wanting to enjoy authentic Khao Soi. If you want to try genuine Chiang Mai-style basil dishes, they offer many options, including pork basil and fully loaded seafood basil, with bold flavors just like those I’ve tasted in Chiang Mai city markets.

Mae Chaem Market is another place I like to visit because it has fresh produce, pesticide-free vegetables sold by locals, and traditional snacks like grilled chicken, grilled pork, and delicious Khao Soi Nam Ngiao. Visiting here lets me experience the true lifestyle, not just a tourist spot but the home of the people.

Connecting travel and Chiang Mai context

Mae Chaem is not far from Hod and Omkoi districts, routes I have written about many times, such asDoi Tao Lake RemainsorWat Saen Thong OmkoiTraveling these routes reveals many sides of Chiang Mai beyond the main tourist city, including lifestyles and nature that remain pure and truly enchanting.

For those planning a trip to Chiang Mai, try adding Mae Chaem to your list. I guarantee you’ll have a different experience full of great memories, just as I, mr.hotsia, have experienced.
