Travel Chai Prakan Chiang Mai with mr.hotsia: The charm of a small town full of life and nature
When talking about Chiang Mai, many people probably think of the old city, walking streets, or the bustling Warorot Market. But for me, mr.hotsia, visitingChai Prakan Districtis an interesting new experience. Chai Prakan is located in the northern part of Chiang Mai. It is a small, peaceful town full of local life blended with beautiful nature. It is not far from the famous tourist spot Doi Ang Khang, making this route a great stopover for travelers heading north.
Travel and Atmosphere in Chai Prakan
This time, I traveled from Chiang Mai city via Highway 118, passing Mae Taeng and Mae Ai, reaching Chai Prakan in about 2 hours. The town is not very big, but stepping off the vehicle, the first thing I felt was the peaceful community and the much cooler air compared to Chiang Mai city. I strolled through a small market with fresh produce shops, local coffee shops, and local restaurants with enticing aromas that I couldn't resist tasting.
The morning market here is not as large as those in Chiang Mai city but has the charm of genuine local life that travelers like me really enjoy. Most of the fresh produce sold are vegetables and fruits grown locally. Around the market, there are many shops selling Khao Soi, Nam Ngiao, and Northern local dishes to try. I stopped to eat at a famous Khao Soi stall where the elderly lady cooks herself. The soup was rich and perfectly spiced. This kind of taste is hard to find in big cities.
Natural Attractions Around Chai Prakan
After recharging with authentic Northern food, I drove on to experience the nature around Chai Prakan. There are hiking trails that are not too difficult, suitable for those who want to get close to nature, especially the trail to Mae Koeng Waterfall. The clear, cool water flows from the mountains, surrounded by large trees and cool air, perfect for relaxing and taking photos.
Chai Prakan is also close to several well-known Chiang Mai attractions I have written about, such asWat Saen Thong, OmkoiIf you have more time, try visiting the temple that houses the sacred Phra Chao Saen Thong. Or if you want to see more unique nature, try going toDoi Tao Lake Ruinswhere the water recedes to reveal the ancient lakebed, like walking back in time through Chiang Mai's ancient nature.
Local Life and Culture in Chai Prakan
What impressed me most about traveling in Chai Prakan was seeing the villagers' simple and warm way of life. Most locals still practice traditional agriculture, growing rice, vegetables, and raising animals. There is also interesting local handicraft, such as traditional weaving. I had the chance to talk with a weaving woman at the market. She explained the methods and meanings of the patterns passed down through generations, helping me understand and appreciate Northern culture more.
In the evening, the small town market becomes lively with a variety of local foods like Sai Ua, Nam Prik Num, and traditional desserts. Importantly, the prices are affordable and the flavors delicious. For those wanting to try something new, I recommend walking the market in the evening and asking vendors about their signature local dishes.
Accommodation and Relaxation in Chai Prakan
Chai Prakan has limited accommodation options, but I chose to stay at a small homestay with very kind owners. Waking up to see mist covering the mountains and hearing birdsong made me feel very relaxed. Staying here is perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle and live slowly, truly experiencing nature and local culture.
