Unseen Chiang Khong 1/13: A 10-Year Retrospective Trip by Mr. Hotsia Exploring Chiang Khong

Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province, is a border town full of unseen charm that many may not know well. For me, mr.hotsia, who has traveled and gathered experiences for over 10 years, returning to visit Chiang Khong this time is a nostalgic trip filled with memories and diverse feelings. It’s not just an ordinary travel route but an exploration of local life, local markets, and stories hidden in this small town.

Chiang Khong is located on the banks of the Mekong River, opposite Laos. This town is peaceful with a very pure natural atmosphere. I started my journey by exploring the fresh market by the river, a cultural connection point between Thai and Lao. Here, you will find local vendors selling fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and local foods. I tried local dishes like fermented fish papaya salad and hot sticky rice, with bold flavors hard to find elsewhere.

Besides food, the Chiang Khong market is also a hub for handicrafts from various hill tribes living nearby, such as beautifully patterned handwoven fabrics and delicate silverware. These products reflect the lifestyle and culture that have been strongly preserved.

After walking through the market, I drove along the Mekong River to enjoy the beautiful views on both sides and stopped at Wat Phra That Pha Ngao, an ancient temple located on a cliff. The atmosphere here is peaceful and sacred. Besides being a beautiful viewpoint, it is full of historical stories I heard from local monks.

Chiang Khong has many other interesting spots, such as the pier market bustling with cargo boats crossing the Mekong between Thailand and Laos, or taking a ferry to see the river from a unique perspective. I, mr.hotsia, recommend spending your evening by the river to watch the sunset reflecting on the water, creating an unforgettable impression.

If you plan to visit Chiang Khong, don’t forget to prepare in advance because it’s still a small, quiet town with limited accommodation. I recommend staying in Chiang Rai city, which offers a variety of affordable and comfortable lodgings, such as Suknirand Hotel, where I stayed and was very impressed. It’s also close toChiang Rai Clock Towerand the lively market. If you prefer a livelier atmosphere, Chiang Rai city also has the Saturday Walking Street “Kad Chiang Khai Ram Luek,” where I once strolled and enjoyed local food with great fun.Strolling in Chiang Rai Cityis an experience not to be missed.

Additionally, if you have more time, I, mr.hotsia, invite you to drive up to Doi Chang, not far from Chiang Rai, which is a famous coffee-growing area in Thailand. Here you will see lush green coffee plantations and experience the lifestyle of the Akha and Lisu hill tribes up close.Driving Trip to Doi Changis one of my favorite trips, whether for the atmosphere or the peace rarely found in big cities.

Back in Chiang Khong, I also want to recommend not missing local roadside food, where some places may look simple but have outstanding flavors, such as the duck noodle shop or curry rice shops with various menus and affordable prices. I happened to find these along the way, and they became the best meals of this trip.

For friends interested in seeing the atmosphere and details of my trip in Chiang Khong, you can watch the video I recorded inUnseen Chiang Khong 1/13: A 10-Year Retrospective Trip by Mr. Hotsia Exploring Chiang Khongon YouTube. You will see real footage and fully experience the feelings at that time.

Finally, for me, visiting Chiang Khong is not just about seeing beautiful views or new places but experiencing a lifestyle that remains simple yet full of energy and warmth from the people, along with unembellished natural beauty. For anyone wanting to escape the hustle and seek a heartfelt journey, Chiang Khong is the answer I, mr.hotsia, sincerely recommend.
